It’s worth investigating an AppleCare claim.

I've read nothing can be done unless it's below 80% within the first year.

dunno if that is true

yep it has apple care

Something sounds buggered. My M3 Pro was bought in 8/2024 and it's at 91%.

I have an Apple Macbook Pro M2 which I think I got in 2023.  Battery is 90%.  Don't know if how I use it is optimal.  Most of the time it is cabled to a Studio Display which is providing power to it so it isn't running off battery.  Rare occasions when it is actuall run below 50% like sitting in living room watching a game and telling lefties how stupid they are on Facebook.

I would still ask. Start a paper trail, if nothing else.

Honestly 63 full cycles seems like a lot in ~9 months.  What is your usage scenario?

It's used multiple days a week on battery power with Bluetooth and or wired headphones 5-6 hours.   Then put on the charger towards the end of the day.  Not always

since new devices don't come with chargers. It's been charging my phones and iPad from this device (and the last two MacBooks I've owned)
using the Apple charger and cables that came with it

I've never had a battery drop this fast ever

I use my MacBook Pro daily, pretty extensively. Including for work.

I had mistakenly believed that I should treat the battery the same way as I did laptop batteries from years ago... that I should NOT keep it on the charger, but instead let it run on battery until it needed charged and then plug it in and let it fill up... at which point I'd unplug it and use on battery again.

Apparently that's not the way anymore... they know how to keep the batteries safely maintained, and the damage with the newer batteries is from the number of charge cycles, not by keeping it charged.

I've stopped the constant discharge/recharge cycle, and now keep it on the charger and fully charged, with "Optimized battery charging" selected.

I have 88% capacity left, with 527 cycles total.

Mine has almost 400 cycles over 5 years and is at 86%

@cruze5

Is the battery set to charge to 100% instead of 80%?

There is an app you can buy called Aldente that limits the charging to a lower percentage to not wear out the battery.

Nothing to worry about.

Your battery most likely wasn't at 100% FCC the day you took it out of the box.

The battery is designed to retain 80% FCC at 1000 cycles.

Interesting. I've been wondering about my work Mac. My last one was always on the charger and got to the point that I had to take the charger with me because the battery wouldn't last long at all.

I got a new one last year and treat it the same but haven't had the need to work outside the home much. I'll have to check it out.

Depending on the Mac and the exact version of macOS installed the system will be far better at managing power and battery health than the user.

All of Apple's devices there is some machine learning going on behind the scenes that help maintain battery health.

If you think it's behaving out of spec Reset the SMC  and drain the battery to between 15 and 20%.
Allow the battery to charge back to 100% (or as close to it when charging stops) and drain again.

Then monitor battery performance.
While you don't have to over think it, it is a good idea to exercise the battery periodically by letting it drain to below 50%.
How often you do this is kinda up to you. I do it at least once or twice a month - If I think about it.

observation here.

i've been using the magnetic cable.   now switched to the usbc cable

its holding at 80% charge with no change on my part.

what is your experience in this?     i was told the magnetic is superior?

Charging with the MagSafe cable and the USB-C cable is the same.

what do you mean it's holding at 80%? Do you mean it stops charging at 80% full, Or do you mean your battery is holding 80% life?

I meant holding the battery charge at 80% then charging later

gonna try the other cable again next week to see what happens

That's normal. The power management system has learned your charging habits and limited the charge to 80% to prolog battery health.

If you know you're going to need 100% charge you can click the battery in the menu bar and tell it to charge to 100%. There are also some features coming where it will look at your calendar events and go ahead and charge to full before your meeting or business trip.

Type of cable doesn't matter in this case, the system is regulating power intake and use, regardless of how it's coming in.
