great photos. That water in afghan is ice cold I'll bet, sheer snow melt from the mountains? dishwasher safe how do yall clear that wadi 1st before rolling through it? Sucks having to wear all that dats and stuff huh. the asv's a really good vehicle in ways, it's a very safe ride, a vic in our squad struck an ied 2 weeks ago and killed the wheel and some of the armor but hardly anything else, the crew were overall well, just shaken. And they say there's been 0 fatalities in it. But certainly any vehicle is vulnerable to some things. I know all through mob site we heard about the ied that took out an abhrams and blew the turret off. the biggest threat in an asv in my opinion is not being able to get out in water, or if it were on fire. The hatches could all be blocked easy enough if it rolled and depending on where the turret was the top hatches could be blocked. And it's very cramped inside, I consider it like spelunking with body armor on. It's easy to drive though and has a bouncy ride, goes most anywhere. We had to cross open desert close to the syrian border going to the marine outpost danang, there's no real route to follow to get there, and the desert has 1 or 2 feet of moondust in places, and you couldn't see because of all the dust kicked up so we had to fan out and go far enough out to where we could see and we had some fun doing that. I pushed it some to see what I could do, it's a very capable 4wd vehicle, or in that case dune buggy. mark 19's on those things are about useless though, they jam up a lot. almost every belt from all the dust. |

Ive got 2 M1117 in my squad, I had to send 2 teams to balad for the damn training, for like 3 weeks in october, bastards were up there soaking up the sun at the pool. my guys cant stand the ASV, Gunners cant see shiite unless your up out of the turret, cant shoot over the back, cant get in cant get out, God help us if we ever have to drag someone out of it, all the crap in there. We run with stripped down vests, but still. The MRAPs seem to be everywhere latley, we get them in march so they say. |

| That's what I was writin about, getting in and out of the hatches are hard to do, especially wearing the ridiculous dats our command makes us wear. They stop "9mm" rounds supposedly, as if that's a threat in an armored vehicle, where as getting out in time is. I feel safe from ieds though, so for me that's where it counts. The mraps are certainly cooler and well designed, but myself, I don't know of any army units around the anbar who have those. But the asv's are much better than humvess for protection. |

im with 181 infantry, out of the IZ, but were down at Butler a couple weeks ago, and eating at Hammer. Stayed in "barracks" at Butler. kinda sketchy with the IAs running around all night.....I mean, it was Thursday and all. I definitley slept on my back. |

i hear ya, my old neighbor from benning was on a MTT team at BRC. we used to go out and use his phone and internet when we first got here and had none on hammer. i came out the door right into an iraqi with an RPG up and a shemagh covering his face.  turns out he was "friendly", just carrying it into the compound. a change of underwear later and after prying my finger from my selector switch i was cool. i was up there last month, saw the iraqi HVAC system on the FOB....i giant metal duct going up to the roof, and a dude standing up there over a giant fire in inside the outlet on the roof. hammer sucks bigtime, im glad we only go there once in a great while for refits. |

this is a track I saw the other day going into camp ramadi, I guess they race remote controll vehicles on it, or maybe camel spiders, it was quite elaborate. rat truck rations  red air al asad had the worst red air I'd ever seen yesterday, it was surreal, inside the rooms outside light from windows and cracksin doors glowed orange, like close encounters of the 3rdkind, outside it was as is in the photos, these are off the camera as is, 0 editing. For some reason they don't fly aircraft in condition red air, maybe the red air is kryptonite to night flyin instruments and what not.   |

We've definately chewed some of the same dirt. Had an underground IED hit us across the river from Salman Pak on RTE BUG, we took our platoon pic just off of MSR Tampa below the Baghdad this way sign on RTE Christie. There are some small moments when I kinda miss FOB KALSU....but not too often... here's a pic of the EOD team sergeant standing in the hole.  Our BIG sandstorm...  Loading up the 25mm...and while they may LOOK like candy corn, they do not TASTE like candy corn...  This was down in Diwaniyah...  Chilling with some Mongolians at FOB ECHO in Diwaniyah  A Polish Army BRDM...  The best crew served I saw the entire trip...  Messing around with an RPG  Trying to decide what to drink..  And trying to get free wings....  Got more, just a matter of uploading them. |
It's an MG3, the updated MG42, chambered in 7.62x51 instead of 8mm Mauser. Still ran like a champ tho! Doesn't feed with a disintegrating belt like ours which makes picking up the dunnage a little easier. |

All MG3 should be able to feed the German Non-Disintegrating belts, UK disintegrating links and the US M13 disintegrating links. In 05' I had two Portugesse MG3's, one Iranian, and one Pakistaini MG3. Fired all with the US and UK links.  Notice the MG3 on the back of the turrent behind the M2HB. Had mounted a HK 50rd side saddle drum with disintegrating link. MG was carried for as a back up incase M2 went down (1200 rpm). Other guns are M240s with spade grips. That's 5th SFG in the pic. The M240Bs were modified with Helo kits to convert them. The fixed stock took too much room in the back of the GMV. My truck (one taken the picture) had a MK44 7.62 Mini gun aboard with another M240C on the back of the turrent. CD |

nice! i had the spades on order for the longest time for my 240, i had to use a coax for a while on my guntruck after we swapped companies and turned in our crew served weapons. spades never came in, i just had to swindle enough parts to make a full bravo kit for it. halfway through i had a 240 pistol on top of my truck. bravo bipod, barrel, pistol grip and no buttstock, only the coax backplate with a charging cable. it sucked. |

 I think I just went under this a few nights ago, or 1 just like it, it was late and I was cold and tired, gunning in the rat truck, but this was unmistakable, unless there are more than 1 in iraq. north tampa just outside of speicher if I'm correct. |

I have noticed in a lot of the deployment pics here and in other threads that you Army guys are using this cammo pattern, no offence but your guys are really sticking out from sand. Is because there clean/newly issued and have not yet been broke in the reason why they dont hide you guys well? Been wanting to ask this question for a long time now... thanks |
every soldier that I know of is issued and wears the acu uniform present day in iraq and afghan, I don't know about special ops though. Unfortunately you are correct, they don't really conceal soldiers in the desert much at all, personally, in my opinion the army simply got this 1 wrong. It's not the digital pattern though it's the colors. The patterrn is effective with colors that go with the environment. |

CD, I knew the MG3 could use the M13 link, for some reason I just brainfaded on that fact and when the IA's theirs out, I wasn't breaking open any of my truck's ammo to feed the IA gun while they had ammo for it! BTW, is that the "Finger of Allah" on the side of your M2 in that pic? The ODA working south of us said the IA's they worked with called the M2 Surefire light the "Finger of Allah"...those GMV's are the schitt! |
