i have a 8k winch left over from my second gen 4runner days. now i have a 2016 ram double cab 1500 4x4. as it sits now my truck is around 6000 pounds. i know the winch is too light for straight pulls but would it be safe to use it on 2:1 or 4:1 pulls? trying not not spend $1000+ on another winch. |

Line rating and line speed and strength of your mount will be the issue. You can pull the pyramids with a 1/2 horse winch. Problem is, you'll die of old age before much of anything happens on the pyramid side. |

If your old winch uses steel cable, I would replace it with synthetic. It's so much easier to work with. My rule with winching other stuck vehicles is snatch block everything. I'm usually not in hurry when using my winch. It's a good time to slow everything down and focus on safety. Get everyone out of the way. No reason you cant use a Spanish Burton with an 8k winch. Trail riding, I will frequently do a single line pull to get my vehicle up over a ledge. If helping another vehicle get up over something, I will frequently tie off rear of my Jeep to a tree and use a single line pull. I was just watching these videos the other day:  9 ways to rig a 4x4 winch using 1 snatch block  6 ways to rig a 4x4 winch using 2 snatch blocks When needing to winch someone up a hill, in the past I have always turned my Jeep around, tied off the rear, and winched them. This would've worked better allowing me not need to turn around or tie my Jeep off.   |

Guys ran 8k winches on trucks for years. Granted newer trucks are heavier but unless you are totally buried a 8k winch will do the vast majority of the work you need to do. I had a beat up Warn 8074 I think and I only had to double once to pull out my dumbass friend that buried his 2wd suburban. Most situations you have plenty of time so you can run a single line and see how it goes. No pull? Bust out a pulley. You start running into multiple instances of it not being able to pull what you need then you can upgrade. |
