I got sent a m.2 nvme drive. it is in an enclosure. but I have tried 2 different machines and it isn't readable. one machine shows it in windows explorer but says it isn't accessible. the other shows it only in disk manager but greyed out. I think the enclosure is bad, but I don't have a slot to plug it into. (well I might have a mb that supports it, but have to open up a couple machines to check) is there a good adapter vs enclosure for this so I can plug it into sata cables? or is the nvme to pci slot adapter better? just trying to get data off for someone not trying to run it like that long term. |
You can get an enclosure for USB for like $20 off Amazon...I have a few of these

If you want full speeds you will want a PCI-E adapter card with m.2 slots. Lots of options to google up. If you just want to use it like a standard drive, just get a new USB 4/3 enclosure . I don't think the NVME to SATA adapters exist, of if they do they are not good. |

thanks, not trying to use it full time. just need to get access to some files on it because the main computer it came from died. thanks for the sugguestions. found a machine in my pile with a nvme slot. will try to make an image there and then sort through the image file if it can see it. |

disk manager wouldn't let me do anything with it except turn it into a dynamic disk. none of the software I used helped either. I didn't want to convert it in case he wanted to send it off for recovery. any software that let me try to recover data only saw it as 512 GB. instead of 2TB. I already gave it back, but wouldn't mind hearing what else I should have checked. |

Whatever was wrong with the drive wouldn't have been fixed by using a SATA interface. It would be like walking to a business instead of bicycling there. The place is still closed down and you can't get in. A low-level disk wipe would have fixed it, but I'm not sure how to do that in Windows. |
