Which of two Faber steel tanks?  I have a choice of one.

Short tank is a FX117DVB high pressure cylinder, used a few times. Natural steel finish. Last hydro 2018.

Tall tank is a FX120DVB high pressure cylinder. Never used.
Painted high gloss grey.

Both cylinders have RH DIN/Yoke valve, and boot.

Item # Fill Pressure-PSI Liters *Cubic Ft. Length In. Dia In. Weight Lb. Buoyancy
Full / Empty
FX71DVB 3442 9 71 21.26 6.73 24.7 -6.97 / -1.40
FX120DVB 3442 15.3 120 29.33 7.24 39.2 -8.82 / 0.65

I'm thinking of using one for refilling an airgun reservoir.

Short one's hydro has a year left; what's the hydro date on the other?

I'd buy the one with the longest hydro.

Either way, I wouldn't buy one that didn't have a current VIP  otherwise a dive shop won't fill it.

Thanks.  I won't be getting either.  They're on Craig's List in Denver.

I found a used aluminium one.  It should be good enough for my purpose (air rifle).

For air guns, you would benefit from higher pressure AND volume.

Most large aluminum tanks are 80 cu. ft. @3000 psi- not a hell of a lot of air for PCP airguns.

Again, I wouldn't buy ANY tank without a current VIP (no dive shop will fill it otherwise). If it fails VIP, you're out the money you paid for it.

Never ever seen tank that would not pass  a useless VIP
Unless old steel ones or somebody left
Open, otherwise they can be cleaned
Hydro on steel or newer aluminum
Should be under $50.00
Also get on EBay and buy your own VIP stickers
VIP is a unregulated racket for dove shops
Should still be looked into yearly for precaution

Bad advice. Shops may very well not fill tanks VIP’d by private individuals. I’ve run into that at multiple shops. The average diver has no business looking into a tank as they’d have no clue what they’re looking at. You need training for that.

VIP is a scam foisted on divers by the industry.

There is no requirement by OSHA or DOT for VIP- only hydro testing every 5 years for steel and aluminum tanks.

That being said, no shop will fill a tank without a VIP sticker.

"Training" to VIP a tank is simple to non-existent. It doesn't take much to be able to look in a tank to spot corrosion or do an eddy current test on threads.

So I wound up buying a used aluminium tank ($10, gas to get there cost more) and it cost me $12 for VIP.  Looked on outside.  OK.  Screwed top off, dropped xmas tree lights on inside and looked on inside.  OK.  Cost plus refill of air was $12.

It's for an airgun and if you belong to the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association, you'll see my article on it in the Jan 2023 issue.
