I was on “team dog” for years. Was allergic to cats in childhood so never even considered it. Fast forward many years, and I discovered I was no longer allergic to cats. Got one as a family pet (wasn’t my pick). I had no idea how wrong I was. He was the hands-down best pet I ever had. I don’t need to walk him. I don’t need to bathe him. He uses a litter box instead of having to let him out / back in constantly. We can leave him alone for a few days and no worries. Meows are exponentially less anyone than barking. He will murder any mouse that makes into the house before I even know we have a mouse. And he is one of the most affectionate animal companions I ever had. Only competition in that regard is the second cat we got after realizing how awesome it was. Cats are like equals; like roommates I share a house with. The dogs are like these toddlers that never grow up and need constant attention. I feel like for decades, there has been social pressure that men are expected to like dogs more than cats, and a lot choose dogs because of that social norm, not necessarily because it’s what they might actually like the best. And I think that mindset might be very slowly starting to change. |

I am 10000% behind the 'get both' option, but sadly in my current full-time employment lifestyle a dog would be bored shitless. A pair of cats, on the other hand, keep themselves entertained while I am at work, and receive pettings when I get home. When I retire, its back to having Dogs AND Cats |

Not a fan of indoor cats. They'll climb on your tables/countertop. Liter-boxes typically smell like shit to me. (Unless you literally dump it all daily). They extend claws into the furniture and/or your leg. For outdoors, especially if you have property, they are amazing at snake & mice control. Totally depends on the specific animal. They can both be tiresome assholes or else the most devoted, loving partners imaginable. I voted dog since the odds are in their favor. |

Cats are far more discerning about who they befriend. |

| One big tomcat for outside rodent control that can come in sometimes to stay people friendly. One trained dog as a combo, good friend that's got your back, as a watch dog, or hunting buddy. Be prepared for being tied down and responsible ownership for maybe 10-14 years. |

| Love my dogs. Have had dogs for most of my life. I would have a cat but crazy allergic to them. Visited my niece a few months back and within a half hour my voice was getting scratchy, eyes dried up and started sneezing. And the cats were in a closed room in the basement and I was on a double dose of Zyrtec. |

Couldn't be in the traveling business with dog. My yard is guaranteed not to have snakes, rodents, rabbits, lizards and only a limited supply of birds that try to corner cross. Back door guard: Copper. 23# when he was younger.  Binkx the Terrible. Catches and fetches just like a dog. Puts holes in the beer cans when I try to have him get me one though.  Margo the killing machine
