Glad you found what you were looking for! We went to Repticon in Atlanta this past summer and again this past weekend. My son got a hognose snake at the first one (his birthday present), and my daughter got a ball python at the second one (her birthday present). Our BP is a yellow belly that’s 100% het for something, but I have no idea what. I’d have to do a lot of research before breeding her anyway, so I’m not really worried what she’s het for at this stage. I’d be more inclined to breed the hognoses than the BP at this stage anyway. Are you planning on breeding yours? |

Way back when we were into the hobby, we'd go to "reptile shows" that were usually held in the same venues as gun shows. Thinking back, I don't know how on earth I didn't suffer a heart attack from worry with our being away from the house at work for over twelve hours a day with all those aquariums and heat lamps.  I thank God we never had a mishap. Be safe with that stuff.

Just an update. Both snakes doing really good. Healthy, active, and eating without issues, although the all white one took 2 weeks before it would take food at first. Humidity levels are hard to keep up. I have the screen top 70% covered with a film to trap humidity in and a good size bowl of water in there. Also some water poured into the substrate. humidity hovers around 40%. I try to give them a few spritzes of water in the cage once a day to boost the humidity up a little bit. More so when they shed. This okay? My temps are about 90f on the hot side and about 76f on the cool side. Currently I have a 40 gallon breeder tank that I divided in half. Each snake has half the tank for themselves.  @CLICKBANGBANG (ignore the big breasted anime figure. Took photo as a joke for someone  )

You can't keep them humid all the time, you're fighting the laws of physics and you won't win. |

Just cover most of that screen. You can use a garden mister or round up sprayer (new, mark water only) to soak the substrate when they go into shed. Are you using belly heat? I’d try not to give them too much direct light. Even better, black out the sides and back of the tank to limit light. I’ve seen guys paint the outsides, use black paper, or black cloth. Make sure they have a good hide. be surprised is they go off food for a min here and there. Other than that for ideas, they look happy! If they are eating, pooping, and shedding normally, you’re probably doing something right. lol. |

Who's getting an upgrade? Buzz Butt is getting an upgrade! Currently he's in a Boaphile 3x2x2 arboreal enclosure with the perches removed. Its next occupant after it's cleaned and disinfected will be a carpet python and he can have the perches back. BB is being moved into a brand new PM Herps 48x24x16 trap/shift enclosure. The center divider slides in and out from the front so we can safely contain him on one side while we clean or change his water on the other. He's starting to run off the tongs when we move him out of the enclosure, probably because they're too small. We still have to put some small LED task lights in it and install the heat tape. My understanding is that CA = Central American. They tend to run a little smaller than their South American cousins but the morphs you listed are from boa imperator not CA lines. I had a hypo CA female. Very sweet snake, easy to handle, petite for a boa. Wouldn't surprise me if she were F1 generation from a wild-caught import due to her age. A friend of mine uses her for reptile education now. |

The female Burmese python up in post #24 had been physically abused by her prior owner, who got her because he had been told that burms are typically chill, and while adults often are, of course the neonates can be defensive and nippy just like any other baby snake. The prior owner didn't like getting bit and since Astraea was kept in a fish tank he would reach in, grab her by the tail, pull her out, hold her by the tail at arms length, and bounce her up and down so she couldn't climb up her body to his hand and bite him again. Finally he got too scared to touch her because she would start striking at his hand immediately when he put it in the fish tank to grab her. So, he contacted animal control to see if they would take her, and animal control referred him to us since they don't deal with anything except "cute and furry" or livestock. Snakes get referred to us, lizards/crocs/turtles go to other people. Animal control / DNR also sends us snake removal calls when native critters need to be removed from garages, cars, etc. and moved somewhere safer. After several months of mishandling you can imagine this girl's disposition when we got her, and by now she was 4-5 feet long and had a justifiable fear of people. So, here are some of the techniques we used on her. Note there isn't a quick fix, it took us over a year to turn her around and she did make us bleed regularly, though thankfully she never bit my face (not for lack of trying). This is most important, you can never return a defensive snake to its enclosure if it's been striking recently. Fleeing yes, striking no, or you will reinforce that biting/striking means that you go away leave the snake alone. The snake is rewarded for running or settling, never for striking. Interact with the snake daily, even if it has just eaten or is in shed. An interaction may last only a few seconds or it could be an hour. It may not involve actual handling but ideally it should end with the snake being relaxed. At worst the snake should be fleeing, only because that's a preferable response to striking. Interactions I used: If your snake strikes the glass when it sees you, sit next to the enclosure and read a book or mess around on your phone. Don't get up and leave until the snake has settled somewhere and is being quiet. The idea is to get it used to your scent and presence: you are there, you are not hurting it, and nothing it does other than being chill is going to make you leave. Astraea was in a PVC enclosure with sliding doors. So, I would open the cool side door a bit (if I opened the hot side door the RHP would go nuts due to the thermostat probe cooling off) and again, I would just sit right next to the open door and read. This gave her the option of coming out to investigate me, or not. If she investigated me and retreated back into the enclosure we were done. If she came out and crawled on me I would let her, but I never grabbed her, I basically became a walking tree. Also I did hold her over my head a few times as being above me seemed to calm her. Just don't do it close to a ceiling fan... oops... Once she was ok with that I would put my hand into the open door, rest it on the enclosure floor, and read. Again, it was her option to investigate, strike, flee, etc. If I got bit, I didn't react or grab her. If she came over, sniffed me and retreated, or if she stayed quiet then after a few minutes I would remove my hand and we were done. If she came out I again became a walking tree. There were times I would put her into a pillow case and put her on my lap. She would associate my scent in a place where she could feel safe, secure, and warm. Hook training is fine but it's better for teaching food/no food versus breaking a defensive response or general handling unless you're working with a venomous snake. If your snake strikes at the hook defensively then start the techniques above with the hook versus your hand. You can also hold the end of the hook with your hand for a bit so the hook is warm and smells like you. Don't be discouraged if a defensive snake doesn't make fast progress or backslides occasionally. This process is a marathon not a sprint. I'm very glad we got her past her defensiveness as otherwise she would be unmanageable. |

I can see myself picking up another female boa to raise for a future pairing someday. Until then, I’ll grab an upgraded male to raise for this female. With my ball python production I work with a few trusted breeders. Even still I’ll pull a shed for genetic testing to prove out some codoms with Charlie at Phenome. While it’s being ran at the lab, I’ll test out the hets to verify. Sometimes a different male can grab an egg or retained sperm from a previous season for a split pairing clutch. With the boas, only RGI has started mapping them, and only a few are available. Even if I knew the het was missing, it wouldn’t have changed the pairing. The let down would have just come sooner instead of finding zero Leopards in a 17 sample litter. lol. As it is I’m very happy with the babies. They have shed and will get their second meal Friday.
