What is your general opinion of Citizen watches? (Page 1 of 3)

I'm curious to read what the general opinion here is regarding Citizen watches? I get that they aren't high end time pieces and don't compare to the top Swiss brands but what I'm asking is, how do you think they compare to other major Japanese watch brands in their price range like Seiko, Casio, Orient, etc.? The reason I ask... Citizen watches can be found everywhere. Seems like most people have had at least one of them at some point or another in their life? I rarely hear anybody say anything all the negative about them but yet, they don't get recommended or talked about that much either? They don't have the same kind of brand loyalty/fan base that companies like Seiko and Casio enjoy. Lots of people collect Seiko's and Casio's (specifically GShocks) but you don't hear about people collecting Citizen watches and I'm kind of curious why you think that might be? Or let me ask it in a different way... Do any of avoid buying Citizen watches or consider the brand less desirable then say Seiko or Casio? If so, why? |

I think they compare very well to Seiko watches in the same price range. The Tsuyoa is one of the better sub $500 watches on the market IMHO.

Brand as a whole is just another corporate game. They have good mid-level watches with nice features, but you have to be careful their low-end stuff can look just like the nicer stuff. I have a Garrison eco-drive that i like. It always works and is always accurate. An under $200 watch with glass crystal that is a nice daily wear, but no anything to get excited about. I like my Bulova Wilton GMT a lot. I wear it more than any other watch. A co-worker has a Citizen dive watch i like. I will need to ask the model number. I like the Citizen dive watch styles, but i only buy sapphire crystals these days. So, that cuts out most of the cheaper watches. For cheap divers with sapphire, i would go with Long Island Watches. It is a mixed bag. Their cheap stuff is cheap. Their better stuff is good. Typical corporate scheme to milk a penny from every level of the consumer. So watch what you get, do homework. |

I have had one for several years and it has served me well. I take it hunting, fishing, floating, camping, shooting, running my chainsaw, hiking, etc. The only time I don't wear it is when I sleep or work on a car. It is a great watch. It keeps perfect time.

So it seems so far, you guys kind of view them pretty much the same way I do but that still makes me wonder... Why don't they have the same kind of fanbois that Seiko and Casio have? ETA: I'm down to only one Citizen currently (have had a few others in the past). With the FKM rubber strap, this Promaster has become one of my favorite daily wear watches...

Just bought a FUGU, my first Citizen, a month or so ago, it's pretty nice, my wife thinks it looks "cheap" compared to my other timepieces, can't say that I disagree...I like it for what it is. Only thing that really sticks out to me is that the case back is a little "sharp" - meaning that it could've been tumbled/finished a little better. Overall a nice watch, this pic doesn't do it justice, it's a true automatic, that's what I like it, along with the color (I'm not capturing the blue with my photo) / two-tone. The actualy Citizen MACHINES (the Swiss-style CNC machines) used to make their watches (and that they sell to job shops/machine shops) are *really* nice...that's why I bought the watch...I'm in the manufacturing technology industry.

Think of Seiko as like Toyota. They have a Lexus line, killer Toyota line like LC, 4Runner, etc. all the way down to basic entry level stuff. Citizen is like Nissan. They have some fantastic products like the Patrol and other utility stuff, and also way down to basic entry level stuff. They just never quite got the reputation Toyota did on their good stuff, they never really got fired up good on their Infiniti line, etc. Orient is sort of like Suzuki. |

Seiko and G-Shock both have a history with the US military and that probably does a lot for their reputation among watch enthusiasts. I suspect that there’s a lot of overlap in the areas of watches, military history buffs, and guns. Citizen doesn’t have that association. Plus, they named an entire line of their watches “Eco-Drive”. I can’t speak for others but that’s a deal breaker for me. The environmentalist movement has become so obnoxious and hated that I won’t have anything to do with it. I see “Eco-Drive” and my brain sees “Sustainable, certified free trade, ethically sourced, environmentally responsible, nonbinary, LGBTQ, anti-colonial, pronoun-Drive”. No thanks. |

So to me that aligns them with lower end. Which is fine, I don't mean to be snobbish. I drink Kentucky Gentleman more often than I do Blanton's.... Seiko does run up and starts to get interesting to me in the ~$300 range. Plus they have a good reputation. I bought myself a seiko sport 5 I think but my son, who was in kindergarten, claimed it. He's 10 now and has beaten the ever loving shit out of it and it may have some battle scars but still runs great and glows hard. I think a lot of people hit a certain point of diminishing returns mindset on things they like, be it cars, guns, watches, whatever and they often seem to run together. Look at the guys posting Les Baers with their Tudors and 4runners or GX460s. All really good versions of a level of a thing, without being crazy expensive or overly flashy. |

Seiko does have its fair share of cheap. I can spot a cheap Citizen that looks like a nice Citizen easier than i can spot a cheap Seiko that looks like a nice Seiko. Seiko has so many models and look alikes. Unless you are willing to spend a LOT of time learning Seiko, it can be overwhelming. I skip Seiko. Not bashing. Seiko has some nice watches. I would be happy with an Alpinist. For weekend bangers, i like Citizen eco drive or Nicer Bulovas. For work, i mid tier like my Oris and Chris Ward. For dressing nice, i like my Rolexex but my Omega and Tudor do get some time out to dinner. |

I have spent a fair amount of time going through Seiko's catalog but I've pretty much given up finding one that I really want and fits. I've got enough daily/beater/casual watches that I'm very happy with so at this point, I'm thinking just one more... a really nice "GADA" watch. My heart wants an Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra (the original Blue “Teak” (Spectre 007) version, not the current version) but I don't normally play in that price range for watches so we'll see lol |

Quite fond of this Japanese one - very nice overall for $600. The silver leaf lacquer dial is impossible to photograph properly and looks really different in different light and at different angles. Definitely the party piece of the watch. Strap and clasp are really nice too. |

In the totem pole, higher than Casio, but lower than Seiko. This is probably my favorite (and last remaining) Citizen I own. It's my gym, lawn-mowing, and general outside work watch. If I could find a jubilee bracelet for it, I might even wear it more often, but compared to the SKX007, which it aims to mimic in appearance, it is nowhere close. |

Citizen over Seiko Citizen over Luminox Citizen Over Casios There Eco-Drive line In there Pro-Spec dive watches Are the best in their weight class IMO There radio time is great also, but a BITCH to set!! If you are looking at There Automatic, spend alittle more and get a Tissot If you want to have & build you watch collection wirh our breaking the band & spending a hundred here & there, you could do a lot worse than Citizen |

I have an eco drive since I retired from wrenching. I like it, solar powered. Don't need indiglo from the previous timex expeditions I used to have, and loved. Don't need to see what time it is at O dark thirty anymore. Don't get me wrong; I've looked at Tag Huear watches for 20+ years, I just could never pick out "the one". |

I have several Citizens. I know their lower end isn’t the best but I try to stay in their mid to higher range of watches. The Promaster’s are amazing watches for the money. I’m having a new one delivered tomorrow actually, a Blue Angels Skyhawk A-T. My best friend is a dive master and that’s all he will wear. He says they have a huge following in the diving community and a very solid reputation. I have a Promaster dive watch that I have beaten to hell and back and I absolutely love it. I have a Seiko Solar Flightmaster Chronograph also and I would say the quality is about the same between it and my Citizen’s. Now days I’m leaning more towards Seiko just because I like their designs and history, but I will still buy Citizen’s as well. |

I have a few and used to wear them to the office the diving one was a gift from my wife, and I love it. Not crazy expensive but still a nice watch. They are What most consider the start of nice watches as most are over $100 and you can find them on sale like my wife did (she has one too) I have two divers versions (one with rubber strap and one with metal band) and one a chronograph with leather strap. The chronograph I hardly wear though and love my two divers watches. One looks just like my sieko dive watch I had in the Marines years ago. Zero maintenance on them too so far All are eco drive. I consider them like the guys who make bank but still drive a Subaru or Toyota. They like nice things, but they don't have to be expensive or showy. I always get compliments on them. At my last Job before I retired I was the only person with an analog watch in board meetings and started a trend away from smart watches with the coworkers. Attached File |

I like the one I own. My wife has been wearing hers for like 20 years with no need to change a battery. hve more expensive watches but honestly, these things are a great value. Think I paid $175 for mine and it's taken a beating over the last 10 years....zero issues. | I have 3 Citizens and like them quite well. One is a titanium diver, one is a more traditional diver, and one is a very basic field watch. They've all held time well and been trouble free. I feel like they look good enough to be nice, not overly pretentious wrist candy (if that's your thing that's ok, I'm just not a flashy guy), and they've proven durable/reliable. I think they're nothing overly special, but a very good bang for the buck everyday watch. |

I'm not a watch guy but I do have a Citizen Weekender Eco-Drive that I have been wearing almost every day for 14 years. I bought it because I was intrigued by the idea of never having to get a battery changed. It's just a basic analog watch with a day/date window. The crystal is a little beat up. The original band is long gone. I cycle NATO type watch bands on it. It keeps good time and just keeps working. I would buy another. |

I'm very happy with my Skyhawk Promaster AT Blue Angels edition. What's more is the level of customer service. Here's a little tale. Last August I sent my Promaster AT Blue Angels in to Citizen for repair of a broken stem. They notified me in September that parts for the repair were backordered. Fast forward to November. They tell me that because of a delay in repair due to backordered parts that they are refunding my payment for the out of warranty repairs. In January they informed that they are moving their Texas repair facility and that all repairs are being sent to Japan. They further say that because of the length of time I've been without the watch they will send me a new watch free of charge and that once my damaged watch is returned from Japan they will send that to me as well. Meet the new Citizen Promaster AT Blue Angels edition! I'd say a $795 MSRP watch is more than fair compensation for a few months' wait. This is outstanding customer service of the highest order.

@Yankee-Carpet-Bagger @cjroman Long Island Watch was very quick with the shipping, but I didn't get a chance to install it until a few days after. After wearing it for a few days, including a couple of times at the gym, I'm quite happy with it. It's much more rigid than the Seiko Jubilee, but, with the Eco-Drives being lighter than an automatic, it is not uncomfortable at all. I think it's big improvement. Attached File |
