I'll tell you mine: I applied to an SO in Ohio, I won't tell you which one, who rejected me because I had worked as a cop in Montgomery County, and I changed my last name about 10 years ago. I would have told them that I changed my name because there are no more male heirs in my mom's family and that name would have died with my uncle, but they didn't bother asking me. |

I couldn't do 40 push-ups to their "standards" yet they were literally perfect push-ups for my shoulder width and arm span... A year later I (literally this month) i redid their physical assessment and did the push-ups exactly the same and apparently that's good enough to go to the next step to get into the academy. Maybe they're hurting? But I did have completely different and no female proctors this time. I'm 30 and probably crazy for even trying to go the academy but it's 110k a year starting out with my degrees lol. Edit: Sorry popped up in the active posts and didn't see which sub forum it's under. After I retired as a federal agent (DEA), I applied to be a patrol officer with the local university police in our town. They rejected me saying they thought I was over qualified and would be bored with the job. I told them I had had my fill of excitement and just cruising the campus, and keeping it safe, sounded like nirvana to me. It didn't work. |

| I interviewed with one agency out west years ago. Did fine until I got to the oral interview stage. I won't go into specifics here but one of the questions seemed very specific, probably built around an actual local small town politics issue. They didn't like my answer, and I am OK with that because I can live with my answers all these years later. Small town politics are like a minefield, and not being from the area I was unaware of anything related to local politics. |

Not rejected but forgotten. As a young fellow in a NG MP unit I was looking for a LE job. A fine fellow in my guard unit was a Fed Police union guy. He sees me and tells me he should have called me for a job at a nearby Federal Park who was desperate to fill a LE slot(s). He forgot all about me and said my background was perfect for it. Too late, it got filled by the time we ran in to each other. Frankly I got called for all the state jobs I tested for. Never ever got a response to any of the fed jobs I applied for and their stupidly long application forms. Oh well, the jokes on them. State retirement requirements were met in the year I turned 52. Fed agents in my line of work retire at 62. I am retired three years now and no ragerts. |
The only hyphenated names I like are cartridge names......30-06, 30-40, 38-55 etc.

This was for my cousin. They told him to not bother because his employment history was too long and they didn't want to go through it. He worked in Hollywood at the time as a grip. He wanted to move back to Hawaii and applied at Honolulu PD. As a grip, every project you work on is for an LLC created for that single project. After they finish shooting, they sell or close the LLC to limit liability even more. He worked for Greys Anatomy for 10 years and every season was a separate LLC. On the off season, he would shoot a movie, commercial or music video, each of which was a LLC. So on his 15 year work history, he has 45-50 'employers', none of which existed anymore. So he moved to Hawaii and shot for Magnum PI for a bit. What was funny is that he had to fly to and from California to get out of state perks including the airfare covered. The writers/actors strike killed the industry and now he is a mail man. |

I was applying to a north Texas agency and I was 21. I was also told the city manager was afraid I'd get my certifications and move back to Oklahoma. Ha! | Fresh out of school I was working part time in Podunkville. A full time spot opened up and i was passed over for the mid 30s guy who had "been there longer". Of course he was still part time in his 30s because no one else would hire him. He's the laughing stock of the area and I'm a Detective at a neighboring department now. As someone who did recruiting and background investigations, Just about everyone with a functioning brain passes the initial written test and the PT test is a joke. Both are simply used for an initial screen for the sick, lame and lazy. I can tell you why the vast majority of folks never complete the process. 1. Paperwork. The candidate does not realize it, but the paperwork is a test. We want to see if you are capable of organizing and presenting your packet on your own. I'd say 2/3rds come up short here. Either they lie, fail to provide answers/documents or they simply do not read the form instructions. (The background packet is 16 pages with supporting documentation and yes, the time you take to complete it is part of the test) You will have a lot of people drop out simply when they see the packet. I've tossed background forms for different handwriting styles, (other people) different ink, whole pages skipped, required documents replaced by a handwritten note, made up addresses/employers, long blanks in residence/employment history and such. This last goes back to #1. They are trying to hide either arrests or bad finances. How can you not remember where you lived for 5 years? 2. Finances. Prior bankruptcy, excessive debt, a history of late payments, insufficient fund checks, using pawn shops or payday loans to make it thru the end of the month, etc. You would be amazed at the debt load some people carry around. |

Pretty sure I got kicked from the process with an SO here years and years ago, because the guy didn't believe I'd never smoked weed. Still not sure how I was supposed to answer that (indignant when accused of lying, or calm because I had nothing to hide). Either way, having a dad that was a total fuckup drunk and drug addict will kind of do that to you (shocker, I don't really drink either)

Applied for a bigger local agency years ago.. Group of over 50 applicants, later found out I was the only certified applicant, others would be picked up on sponsorship. Passed the written test. Passed the PT eval. Passed the psych eval. Passed the polygraph. Cleared and did ride alongs. Credit was solid. Cadre for their in-house academy and on-boarding program were excited saying I’d just drop in for the primary subjects and could work out all day, get paid the tuition as an additional bonus being certified. Boom, email stating I was suspended from processing with no explanation. Two weeks later I got an email and call attempting to schedule oral board interviews and inquired about the suspension email to get hung up on. Buddy currently working there at the time asked around… here’s another “sorry, you’re white” post. |

I had been at a small city PD for 8 years. Then assigned as a Detective. The Chief was a dumbass and we were at odds a few times. I applied for NHP and volunteered for a rural post. Was accepted and even had the starting date for a brief academy for lateral transfers. I got what I thought was the official welcome letter. Instead it basically said my services were not required, WTF! I called NHP HQ and nobody would tell me anything. Then I called the guy that did my background investigation. He was surprised as I was. Said there was nothing in my background that would preclude me getting hired by them. To this day, I believe the dumbass Chief made a call to NHP and screwed me. It all worked out. A year or so later, I was promoted to Sergeant, which is another long story. The Chief would have never promoted me so the Mayor was involved. A few years later that Chief was fired by the Mayor. I went on to finish my career and retired. |

I applied to lateral from my agency to another about 10 years into my career. I got an appointment letter to take a written exam at their agency and the letter instructed me to wear a short sleeve polo shirt and advised if I had any visible tattoos I'd be disqualified. I called the agency, advised them I have tattoos and while we're allowed to wear short sleeve uniform shirts I choose to wear long sleeve and thought perhaps their letter was an old form and not strictly enforced. Well, it was strictly enforced and that ended my process before it really began

| I applied for the Border Patrol when Clinton was elected and passed through the hiring process. I was asked for 3 preference duty station and I selected three location in WA state. Next letter was a congratulation conditional employment offer. I was right at the cut off age for GS-7 LEO positions. 2 days before I was to leave for Glynco I got a phone call telling me the President had implemented a hiring freeze. I was too old when it was lifted. |

Psych did the personal interview while a whole group of us were still filling out all the psych tests (yeah totally backwards- supposed to examine your written test results, then talk to you). He was insistent that I must be lying about prior MJ use, because he thought my pupils were dilated while we were talking. Told him the room was dim, didn’t know what else it could be, and that I had never used the stuff. He persisted, so I told him to go ahead and call the (different) agency that had polygraphed me the week before, where I had told them the same exact thing, and I had passed. He did not like getting shut down like that, at all. Needless to say he failed me, and I was not hired. Went thru another psych shortly after, he said that the first one was a hack and that I should probably make a complaint to the state association about the incident. Passed psych #2 as well. Ended up going thru a 3rd psych at a different agency, and took that job, just because the offer came in first. Took psych #4 when I lateraled, by then I had figured out the LE psych pattern we had locally- they got paid by the person, so failing more was better for them. They were hesitant to fail any laterals, because that might have them get questioned about why. I also saw one who failed a guy a couple times, and was looking to fail him again, until he learned the guy had a few years in at another place, then suddenly he changed his mind and gave the guy a pass. After dealing with more than a few loony psych’s on calls, I think that field is half full of nutcases themselves anyhow. A buddy flat out got told by the Fire Dept that he was not being hired because he was a white male. Couple years later we hired him for LE, and he currently runs a major training agency. He would have been a great fireman as well. Don’t think they could turn away folks for that these days, the way all LE agencies are begging for employees, but back in the mid 90’s it was hundreds applying for one job… |
