Taking a break from my norms to explore classics. Attached File I'm not getting out of it what I think a lot of people suggest. Obviously an important interesting look into the mind of a smart dude from a couple of thousand years ago, but some of it I just flat out disagree with. And, I really like the idea of stoic philosophy. |

I'm just getting into Stoicism and have never explored Philosophy as a discipline. Still, it seems the closest to what I have developed as a personal philosophy all on my own. After a complete read through I'm going to read a couple of other things, then I think read The Republic again. Previously I only read excerpts in high school. |

I'm 36 and never have read LOTR or seen the movies. (Not a big reader but trying to get better.) My son (13) and I just started reading The Fellowship of the Ring. I just finished it and he's halfway through. We're trying to really hammer books into our kids and they seem to love it. Any other classics fantasy/sci-fiction recommendations? |

Just finished Hue 1968 by Mark Bowden. It is a good historical account of the battle of Hue during the Tet Offensive in Vietnam. He is a liberal but he stays pretty neutral in his writings. I just started Ben MacIntryre Spy Among Friends which is about the Cambridge Five |

| Finished reading “Earth Abides” last night. Pretty good overall. Written by an academic, about an academic (geologist) in a post-apocalyptic world where 99.9999% of human population is killed off. The writing is a bit stuffy at times. I had to use a dictionary at least a few times per chapter. It was written in 1949 and definitely comes across as being from another time. The first episode of a recent MGM mini-series lines up with the book well, albeit, updated with modern technology and language. |
