Yamaha FG9R I never thought I would have a guitar like this but they gave me a pretty good discount brand new at a not so local shop. I have to say, although I have no experience with high end guitars, this one spoke to me. I love playing it but i would expect to, this is a whole new world for me. I played the model with the electronics and decided I did not want the electronics and looked over the one zi bought some but did not spend a lot of time playing it which was a big mistake. i got it home and realized the fret ends are rough. uncomfortably rough. I called the shop and they suggested a luthier shop. I just pisses me off i did not notice this in the shop. And it blows my mind it left the factory like this. I have smoothed out fret ends on inexpensive guitars both electric and acoustic, i just do not know if i should fix this myself. It is the roughest fret ends i have ever experienced. |

Sweet!!! Great choice. I’m proud for ya. ETA: that is disappointing to hear about the frets on that level of guitar. I’ve always just fixed that little stuff on my own. Usually it’s the nut on the treble side that doesn’t fit right for me. You’ve been practicing for this for years now and have the skills. Take yer time. (Or wreck it and then sell it to me).  |

Welcome to the Tone Whore Club.  The scary part of this is that once your ear becomes accustomed to the quality of the sound-the sparkle-the sustain-the note separation-of this level-you can never go back to average because average sounds like a Gibson with socks stuffed inside. |

I love the guitar, and yes I have been practicing self luthier shit for a few years first on electrics and then acoustics, and here is the big part, I over reacted yesterday. It really isn't as bad as I thought. this morning after a cup of coffee, I got out the fret end file and chose a bad fret end and very carefully with just a few well placed strokes eliminated the sharp corners of one of the fret ends, with the strings on, and smoothed it out nicely without marring the ebony fret board or the neck wood.It took me about 2 minutes. I have to say it was a bit different taking a file to this guitar compared to a $100 used guitar. I have never been good at spending a lot of money for something. But being in my 60s my wife and son both said, how much longer do you think you can wait? I feel very fortunate that I can pick out a guitar like this. This is the very first high end guitar I have played and bought in a shop or anywhere else so it was new territory for me. I really hope I don't end up applying these lessons learned again.  One high end guitar is enough for me, but then I open my safe and say, I thought this way with guns too and look what happened.So I am just going to do it myself and chalk up the lesson learned to just because the guitar hanging on the wall is fucking awesome doesn't mean the one out of the box is exactly the same. I should have spent more time on it, even though I spent about 30 mins, I had already been there a couple of hours and was tired. I was surprised I could absolutely hear and feel the difference between an aged Sitka Spruce top and an Adirondack Spruce top. Once I played it, I was hooked. |

I was used to my Yamaha FG-700S. Then I put a bone nut and saddle on it and lowed the action, a lot. Loved the new sound. then I bought the Zager 50CE and went wow! then I went to the shop and found the used LL26 advertised was actually brand new but they could not advertise it for that price so they put it on Reverb as used, but it was brand new hanging on the wall. I played that a bit. Then I asked about why the price reduction and got the answer. After a year, they put it on sale because they don't want to have new guitars much over a year. then I noticed an FG9 M with a big price reduction, same answer. Then I asked if they had any rosewood FG9s that they have had for a year and they said no but let me see what we can do. They gave me a killer price on the FG9 RX with electronic and I played that and went HOLY SHIT! But I didn't really want the electronics, I will never use them, so I asked about one without electronic and they gave me a 15% reduction in price on one without electronics in the box. They went and got that and I played it and knew I was doomed to buying it. I should have spent more time on the neck, but by then I was tired. Lesson learned. plus no sales tax because I went to a state with no sales tax. anyway, I can smooth the fret ends. So that is what I will do, a little luthier work by my favorite armature luthier that will take the time to do it right. |

But eventually you’ll have a blast and you’ve now gone and paid the price of admission. Your new guitar seriously rivals anything in the $7-9k range. No one will think it sounds like a box with socks in it. I’ve been extraordinary fortunate to have purchased most of my high end guitars on line and unplayed. After a certain price point-they are all good-it just becomes tone, taste, and feel…..and the next one is going to be even better! |
