Wife and I stopped at Grenada on a cruise a few years ago and thought it was a place we'd like to visit again, so we went there for (was supposed to be) a week. I brought my gear and set up two mornings of diving with Aquanauts. Unfortunately, due to the winter storm that rolled through here we ended up cutting the trip a bit short and I had to cancel the second day of diving. I had called Aquanauts to set up the dives prior to heading down there and they emailed me all the waivers and everything, and I sent them copies of my c-cards and paid for the dives. I showed up at the dock (they're at the True Blue resort), checked in, and they directed me to one of their boats. Most of the divers were staying at True Blue and had multiple days of diving booked with them; they'll keep your gear (except for your regs) at the shop and take it all out to the boat for you. Spoke to the guys on the boat, they asked if I was nitrox certified and when I said yes, they directed me to a couple tanks and analyzed the gas while I watched. Both were 30%, as advertised. Nitrox is free with them if you're certified, which is nice. Got my gear set up and we headed out to the first dive. They pick the dives according to conditions, but if you have a preference and you're diving with them multiple days they'll try to accommodate you. We hit two sites, Black Forest and Shark Reef. Black Forest was full of black sea fans (Gorgonias) and the usual little reef fish and critters. Shark Reef is so-named because it's supposedly a nurse shark nursery, but we (of course) saw no sharks there. Biggest fish I saw at either site was a good-sized barracuda. Viz was okay, maybe 30 feet, and the water was a nice 80 degrees. Both were drift dives, which I hadn't done before but found I really liked. Kind of nice to just get neutral and float along with the current - your air lasts forever. At the end of the dives, the DM would shoot a DSMB and the boat would pick us up. Between dives we anchored in the lee of a small island for our surface interval. I was talking to the DM and mentioned that I liked wrecks, and he said they would keep that in mind and try to include a wreck in the next day of diving I had with them. Since I planned on diving with them again later in the week, they said I could leave all my gear, except the regs, and they'd have it ready for me when I came back. Since I ended up cancelling the second day of diving, I just had our taxi driver stop there on the way to the airport and pick it all up. They had it all ready for me and refunded me what I'd paid for the dives without my even having to ask. We would love to go back to Grenada again, and I'd definitely go out with Aquanauts again. |
I don't know what will happen, or if anything will happen. But if something does, I'd rather be the guy with a gun than the guy without one.
