I have a pair of 301s being pushed by an old sherwood. sounds half ass I want to buy the drivers and build my cabinets to make an epic sound system. I am thinking two towers and two subs and at least 1000 watts if not more. I am figuring this is gonna be at least $2000 in materials? what items should I be looking for? brands, websites etc. My other option would be just to buy some off the shelf Klipsch, but I really want some quality sounds that can get loud. |

I built a simple and relatively cheap 2.1 channel system for my living room. I went the way I did because my living room is NOT well suited for audio so investing in anything more "high end" would have been a waste, IMO. Plus, I'm only streaming from Tidal, albeit High Res streaming. I put this system together because I wanted something better than those bluetooth speakers, but didn't want to go overboard as noted. klipsch Reference Premiere RP-600M II SVS Prime Wireless Pro SoundBase SB-1000 Pro Should be just about 2K all in. I does very well for my needs.    |

First, you don't need 1,000 watts to get loud. Unless you're trying to fill an aircraft hangar with sound, any good vintage amp or receiver in the 50 watt range will give you all the volume you can stand. Secondly, speakers have advanced a lot over the the past 50 years. With modern ported designs you don't need huge speakers to get satisfying sound. Even a good set of bookshelf speakers, properly placed, should suffice. Personally, I've never done well with subs as I find them difficult to integrate seamlessly with the main speakers. Better, in my opinion, is simply a pair of speakers you like. |

What is your reference for quality sound? I thought my old Fisher speakers from the 80's sounded good until I heard Klipsch classic speakers (Heresey and Cornwall models). About 15 years ago I built some speakers based on a design published on Parts Express forum. For $200 a piece in parts, they are great. My wife and I had a chance to tour the Egglestonworks factory in Memphis and listen to their speakers in the specially designed listening room. $25,000 each for the speakers. $10,000 each for the amps. $20,000 record player. It was incredible. At one point my wife leaned over and whispered "These sound better than your speakers. But not that much better." I quickly looked for the larger, tower version of my DIY speakers but couldn't find the plans. They are running around somewhere and searching on my phone isn't easy. Budget about $250 to $300 for parts for each tower. Finish can cost $20 for paint and up to $1000 for exotic veneer. Your choice. A good 2 channel stereo is hard to find at a non- audiophile price. I would recommend an Arylic preamp and external pro amp like a model from Crown. I use the XLS1000 for my mains. The nice thing about the Arylic is that it has a sub output. Few stereo receivers do. A DIY sub is easy. That's my favorite hobby. I have over 20 random subs in my garage ranging from 10" to 21". If you are serious about this project, I can help. I've been a member of numerous home theater and DIY audio forums for 25 years. |

I've seen hundreds of designs over the years and Tang Band drivers get great reviews. I just haven't pulled the trigger and built any. In fact, I haven't even heard a quality full range driver in person. I'm currently on this journey. Finally FOUND, then unboxed my speaker cables so I could hook up my previous Master bedroom stereo. Hadn't hooked it up since moving a few years ago since I often listen to music via my well stocked full home theaters (2) or pimp soundbars (2). But this stereo is now used for my basement tavern, and movies aren't a major concern, even though I do have a flatscreen there. If I'm being honest/sensible, the speakers I already have are perfectly fine, but I'm a glutton for A/V gear, especially with a drop dead sexy natural walnut finish. I never really got to experience a more high-end old school home stereo early in my career since I was chasing home theater as soon as I could afford it, and the stereo fell by the wayside. Current rig: Sony 100 x 6 receiver - I don't care about a sub or center speaker for this rig Old Infinity towers (two 5.25" drivers each + tweeter + porting) and stack two Infinity bookshelf speakers on them (one 5.25" driver + tweeter + porting). New Denon 900NE CD Player (with USB for hard drives) Old 10-band Graphic EQ (will upgrade this later....I believe in graphic!) Marantz turntable (still LOVE vinyl, especially new, remastered heavy vinyl!) Pioneer twin cassette deck (haven't used it in how many years??!) New Panamax 5300 Power Conditioner/Surge Protector Some top contenders: Wharfdale Linton Heritage:  Klipsch 8000F II (8" drivers, although I may be ok with the 6000 version, 6" drivers, bonus for being able to stack matching 6" bookshelf speakers on these for more overkill)  Focal Vestia:  Triangle BR08:  SVS Prime Pinnacle These are at the top end of the budget I'm allowing for this, and have the lowest bass response (down to 29 HZ). I don't really want to bother with a sub, and these especially would remove the temptation.  What do the ARF Tower Experts recommend? |

I am running a pair of B&W 803 Matrix that are around 30 years old. They sound amazing (possibly even epic) and I got them for about $1500. I'm driving them with a 300 watt/channel Bryston, but they don't need anywhere near that power to sound great. I started out with a Rotel 90w/channel integrated amp and that worked well too. |

That's why I didn't go crazy, it's a "great room" with big ceilings and I'm not going to treat, so it would be a waste to dump a ton of money into high end components. However, today was a "work around the house" day and my humble system kicked assed. Even when I took a break and sat in front of it, it kicked ass. Very happy.

Are they attached to the stands? Can the stands be attached to the floor? I have a rambunctious cat. Could they handle a 10 pound cat launching themselves onto and off of them? How about a 90 pound dog wiggling into them while demanding to be pet? I've always wanted stand speakers like that but my life never seems to be agreeable with stuff like that. |
