Bought a Wavian in the fall.  It's nice but I need 10+ containers to replace the shitty Scepter plastic ones that are starting to have issues.  Are the VP Racing Fuel jugs good to go or are they prone to leaks/breaking as well?

Thanks!

I bought a 4-pack, and they've been great.  Only leaks I've ever had were when I forgot to close the vent.
I use them to gas up the boat, mainly.
I store them in my garage, and there is no fuel smell.

I can't speak to long-term reliability, as mine are only two years old.

I get about 10years out of them before they started having any issues

They are good, but no plastic is as good as steel, especially for long term storage.

I have three when going to the track I transport e85 blended with meth fuel in them.  They have been great so far.  I also picked up 4 of the steel Jerry cans that Harbor Freight sells for storing fuel during hurricane season for my generator.

Came to say this almost word for word.  Best fuel jug out there IMO.

I wish there was a Rural King near me.  they seem to get mentioned a lot here.  Closest one is 125 miles away.

Cannot say much about VP, but Sunoco jugs are decent and we’re cheaper

I have some that are 15+ years old. The spout gets hard on them but they are easily replaceable. Get the plastic piece that bends the hose slightly. I think Thor makes them.

I'm probably going to snag 4 and use them for taking boat fuel to the lake.    It'll get me about a half a tank, and beats paying marina prices on on ethanol.    Is roughly what we use a weekend anyways.      It's nice having a fuel island close to the house that has 87 non ethanol as well.

What issues? I had some Scepters for many years and they seem solid.

If your Scepters are leaking where mine do, it's the gasket.  Their customer service will mail out replacements for free, though a bit slow getting through the mail.

If you leave them out in the sun for say like a summer they will break down in about five years...  I had yellow and blue cans and the blue cans seem to break down faster (cracks around the necks and tops..)

Scepter makes military cans (MFC's) and civvy (CARB) cans. The Mil-spec ones are solid. The civvy cans are less so.

I have no experience with the racing fuel jugs, but it's at this point that I will throw my $0.02 in and tell you that for long-term storage it's pretty tough to beat a NATO-spec can or a MFC (Military Fuel Can, US-issue).

They're not super easy to get a hold of, but they aren't impossible. Most of them are marked 'for water use only' to get around the CARB nonsense.

For example: https://www.roverparts.com/off-road-accessories/jerry-cans/GJC20K4/

If you get your hands on an MFC, you should change the gasket. It is likely that you have a Diesel gasket in there that will swell (and break the cap) if exposed to gasoline.

If I could use them at work it's probably all I would buy.

We have to have type 1 or 2 DOT or OSHA cans though.

Do those have the same liner as the Wavians? Water destroys the liner.

The things I don't like are the vent location and they swell up in the summer. I have to pay too much attention not to spill with that stupid vent.

I prefer Justrite safety cans or Jerry cans much more.

I don’t have any issues with the vent. You aren’t opening it up fully are you?

You just crack the vent cap maybe like 1/2 turn. Full flow zero leakage. Honestly I pour all 5 gal and never once had a leak out of the vent.

VP jugs or similar are money. I’m going to replace all of my cans with VP

Got VP and Tractor Supply knock off VP's no issues with either, my scepters are ok too but I got rid of the carb nozzles and put on old style nozzles.

Have 2. Will keep until the apocalypse. Only "known" issue is the plastic interface between cap and tubes crack and can leak while filling.

VP jugs are great. Tractor supply sells them also as 5 gallon utility jug. I have atleast 6 of them. Zero issues gas, diesel, race fuel or ethanol race fuel.

3/12/2022 2:51:47 PM EDT
[#31]
They are great, but not meant for long term storage according to my friend who sells them, there seems to be a wide array of opinions on that. He runs a race/auto parts shop, so he may be talking about race fuel.

i got tired of spilling gas with the retarded cans/spouts they sell so i bought 4 VP jugs, a spout, and a bender. works awesome, i can dump 5 gallons into a vehicle very quickly with the vent cracked open

You can get the military cans new from buylci which has the water marked version of the fuel cans. They used to offer free shipping over $100.

I've been using two on the ranch for about 8 months. They have held up very well. Just bought two more. They can be awkward on occasion but that is more about my physical limitations than the jugs.

The 5 gallon jugs sold by the race fuel companies, Summit, etc, work fine. But in my experience they will get brittle over time (years) and have to be watched or discarded at some point before they break and dump their contents.

They may have changed the material since I last used them.

For storage - nope.

I bought one to test, not at all vapor tight seals on the main cap or breather, gas will not last in it very long at all. Great for using to dispense gas though, so I fill them and then use to dispense, but not store.

Euro made steel jerry cans with good seals will store gas for years; eg https://www.roverparts.com/off-road-accessories/jerry-cans/GJC20K4/

Or www.jerrycan.com

I use VP Racing jugs as transfer containers for my boat. They’re very solid and they work great. You’re not really supposed to store gas in them, but I have and it seems to work fine.

I was just going to post I hate the clear hose, it's stout as fuck and doesn't bend easily. Put 2 in my cart to try.
