A running V8 like the old Connolly kits that required extensive machining? Or one of the Chicom bolt togethers that runs off an electric motor? Or the plastic model kit? Here’s a twin Boxter motor I’m rebuilding. If I was patient, I could have bought a new preowned one for $600-$700. But this one came up for sale for $400 and like a dumbass I jumped on it. When it arrived I noticed a few issues that was about a $50 fix. Seller refunded me the $50. Attached File I knew it was an older model engine wit cast rods and an older air bleed carb. I figured drop $200 in it and be as nice as the latest version. I started tearing into it once the rods and all my small parts arrived. Attached File The discoloration on the cam and crank isn’t rust. It’s old, dried castor oil used in the fuel to lubricate it. So I got into it deep and discovered it had bad bearings. They were rusty and gritty feeling. So $100 later, new bearing kit delivered. Started reassembling yesterday. Got the new forged bronze rods installed this morning. Attached File Started mounting the cylinders and the heads and discovered the damned M2 bolt hole was stripped out. Shit. Now I’ve had to order new cylinder jackets and discovered the head gaskets were missing as well. Another $140 spent today on that. So now I’m into it for about $825 if you count the torque meter I had to buy to install the rod bolts and the $25 for a good aluminum cleaner for my ultrasonic cleaner to get all the crap out of it. I’m at the point that I’m in too deep now to back out. I keep telling myself, “NIB at a hobby shop sells for $1400…” if you can find one. It’s not discontinued, but out of production right now. Rumor is they are redesigning it to run off gasoline and not glow fuel.

Dad thought it would be good for me to learn how engines work by building one of hose kits in the mid 80's. I got it built and working, not sure what happened to it. |

Got my twin back together. Had to replace the cylinder jackets because some jack leg stripped out a head bolt hole. Attached File |
