The potholes repeat at regular intervals in the same pattern, that doesn't happen in the real world. You can't blame the guy that created it, he didn't try to pass it off as real, so who cares if he reused textures a bit too much. |

In my crusade of whining about it over and over, I just saw something funny. Even the "minute physics" channel videos are now 20-30+ minutes. I remember when a "long" minute physics meaning it was closer to 5 minutes than 1 minute, but hey, it was only a minute. While I'm whining, I'm also far more likely to bail on videos that don't present me at least 5 "Hooks" (points of interest, surprising unknown info details, etc) that each justify 10 minutes and if they want more they're going to have to spend 2 "hooks" to get me to continue, cliffhangers make desire to bail even higher, so never start/leave with cliffhangers because they suck and will make people hate you fast. I thought about the oddities of YouTube (Man, 20 years ago when there were many competitors, but YouTube was best because it was your search engine and pointed you to it often) back then it'd just upgraded to 240p resolutions with true color instead of compressed to 256 colors promised. Maybe I'm giving them too much credit but the learning pains of youtube were extreme, from producers making millions because Google was interested in getting people to watch, so they paid rates like 5¢/watch and no limit so people would put shock videos and other crap all the time and there was no search engine for video content, only what the title and uploader says about it. Compare that to today where people can make a decent living if they put effort into it, but all of them don't make much of anything per video by YouTube, unless it gets millions of views, then you might make thousands, but not millions like the early days. Now they need to pedal products and allow ads to be injected while people are watching and then the ads/promos they do in video in addition to saying wait, here are the sponsor(s) and here's their demo reel fluff text/demo reel. I'm not sure if youtube has gotten more pushy in getting it to be literally a copy of Cable TV in the late 90s or something Though I'd pick topics over locking into one "channel" since they're very specialized and need to be to get people interested these days, they're definitely pushing something and I am not smart enough to figure out what their planned end game is, as it's changed wildly from just the content alone when it comes to anything political or religion (some say those are same thing) where things are just added in the dark. Video about anything political (especially "wrong team" political) remove these vids. I think they tried AI to do it before it was ready with accurate speech to text and showed their hand there when millions of videos vanished and it was realized all of the removed ones were "violating terms" but they couldn't point at anything specific other than being "a hate group". |

| I know when I first started posting videos to YT myself back around 2010, mostly just fishing stuff, I was limited to 5 minutes. Then later I think it jumped to 10, then 20. Soon after they ask me stuff to be “verified “ and the length became unlimited. Almost all my 1500 or so videos I posted are really just posted for my memories and non monetized. A free storage place basically. Same for FB for my photos. That place has become totally useless now because my friends post hardly even show up anymore because of ads or content have have zero interest in. YT has changed a lot and many of my videos had music that I had to go back and either delete the audio or mark as private to keep my channel operating. I did a little of both. When they removed all the wonderful gun content that pissed me off greatly and I nearly left YT for Rumble. But I have never learned how to operate on that platform or get that algorithm to bring up my interests in a way to find who to follow over there. And it just doesn’t have the content such as RC planes and other hobbies I have. YT is such a great instrument now in learning how to repair just about anything you can think of it’s invaluable but like you said what should take 2 minutes those that monetize manage to stretch now into 20-30 but you can jump ahead on most to get to the point without wasting your life listening to dribble. I do now pay YT $18 a month to avoid the commercials and it’s worth that to me especially when it comes to listening to meditation type stuff. It’s a bit annoying to get just to that point only to be hit with a commercial lol. I seem to remember Twitter videos were limited to 2 minutes but now they are often much longer also. Could be wrong about that since I only look at Twitter/X when someone here or elsewhere post links. My own feed isn’t very good since Twitter fucked up my feed and who I was following when all the shadow ghosting was happening. |

I thought about the oddities of YouTube (Man, 20 years ago when there were many competitors, but YouTube was best because it was your search engine and pointed you to it often) back then it'd just upgraded to 240p resolutions with true color instead of compressed to 256 colors promised. Maybe I'm giving them too much credit but the learning pains of youtube were extreme, from producers making millions because Google was interested in getting people to watch, so they paid rates like 5¢/watch and no limit so people would put shock videos and other crap all the time and there was no search engine for video content, only what the title and uploader says about it. Compare that to today where people can make a decent living if they put effort into it, but all of them don't make much of anything per video by YouTube, unless it gets millions of views, then you might make thousands, but not millions like the early days. Now they need to pedal products and allow ads to be injected while people are watching and then the ads/promos they do in video in addition to saying wait, here are the sponsor(s) and here's their demo reel fluff text/demo reel. I'm not sure if youtube has gotten more pushy in getting it to be literally a copy of Cable TV in the late 90s or something Though I'd pick topics over locking into one "channel" since they're very specialized and need to be to get people interested these days, they're definitely pushing something and I am not smart enough to figure out what their planned end game is, as it's changed wildly from just the content alone when it comes to anything political or religion (some say those are same thing) where things are just added in the dark. Video about anything political (especially "wrong team" political) remove these vids. I think they tried AI to do it before it was ready with accurate speech to text and showed their hand there when millions of videos vanished and it was realized all of the removed ones were "violating terms" but they couldn't point at anything specific other than being "a hate group". I started youtubing when it came out too. It was kind of a new take on “Americas Funniest Home Videos”. Tik Tok has taken over the short video space. They do it perfectly well, and though content can vary a lot, once you follow the right channels, you will get that old Youtube short video experience, but evolved and better. Plus you can skip ads with a flick. My big problem with youtube are AI videos. Low effort, that are designed to drag on and on. If it’s short, and actually informative, then great. It’s the ones that try to hook you with a bunch of questions like “have you every experienced”, or “only people that have X are Y”, or “Here are 10 items and number 8 will shock you”. They are schlock. |
