Easy way to stop that is to announce that if it passes a vote by the member states we will pull out of Europe (except Greenland, of course). I doubt if the eastern EU countries want to have to rely on France and Germany to keep the vatniks out. |

Pfft….he could have gotten that and probably more just by asking. Trolling Denmark with threats of taking Greenland from them by force played into the hands of our enemies. |

Anyone that thinks we haven't been asking nicely for decades is sorely mistaken. Same with Canadas lopsided tarrifs. Finally we got a President that was tired of us being walked all over. We tried the nice way on a lot of things. News: they weren't working, even with plane loads of cash. |

Trump offered multiples amount of cash compared to Obama to Iran for a ceasefire. NATO, the western order, and free trade was built to protect and advance the American interests, Trump is more interested in pissing matches than actual results. |

I'm inclined to believe this... Greenland is poor as fuck and they get jack shit from Denmark... Some mineral rights, being sure to cut Greenland in on a little chunk of the profits, would have probably gone a long way. |

Originally Posted By Dirtydog: Anyone that thinks we haven't been asking nicely for decades is sorely mistaken. That is not true. People act like the U.S. military presence and bases in Greenland were reduced over the past 50 years because Greenland or Denmark wanted the U.S. less involved there, and somehow the U.S. had been TRYING to get permission for more bases. That's total nonsense. Nothing substantially changed in the agreements that gave the U.S. the right to military bases and control over them. In the 1951 agreement, the U.S. already had the right to the three large existing military bases (Thule, Narsarsuaq and Sondrestrom) and was already allowed to established new defense areas. The U.S. military presence was reduced, and two of the three military bases were essentially abandoned, NOT because Denmark and Greenland didn't want them there, but because the U.S. decided they were no longer interested in maintaining those bases. Denmark and Greenland didn't make it more difficult for the U.S. to establish new bases. Rather, the U.S. abandoned existing bases that we already had the rights to. So this new agreement allows for two new bases, in addition to the existing one (Thule), for a total of three bases. ... instead of the original three bases that were agreed to in the 1951 agreement. ![]() Yeah, I know there are some additional details to this new agreement, and the U.S. gets a bit more control and flexibility, but all of that would have been granted if we had just asked. Greenland was VERY interested in new investments, and would have been excited about it ... right up to the point when Trump started talking about buying (or taking) the island, and that's when public opinion in Greenland turned against him. |

Copy/paste from google. Pretty simple: 1941 1945: During World War II, after Nazi Germany occupied Denmark, the U.S. stepped in to protect the territory, establishing crucial military airfields, weather stations, and bases. 1946: Recognizing its massive Arctic value at the start of the Cold War, President Harry S. Truman offered Denmark $100 million in gold to purchase Greenland outright. Denmark rejected the offer. 1951 1955: While Denmark maintained sovereignty, a 1951 defense treaty allowed the U.S. to construct major military installations, including Thule Air Base (now Pituffik Space Base). The Pentagon internally studied purchasing the island again in 1955 but did not make another formal offer. Most recently, the U.S. signed a security agreement with Denmark and Greenland at the United Nations General Assembly, allowing the U.S. military to expand its footprint and reopen former Cold War-era base sites eta; I should be clear, I'm not speaking to his personality or his abrasive behavior. |

Greenland & Denmark are extremely happy about the deal. In exchange they are forever protected by the United States.![]() US, Denmark, and Greenland Sign Military Agreement at UN General Assembly |
|
Key points from the official statement Sovereignty intact: Both leaders stressed that the deal "recognises the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our Kingdom and the right of the Greenlandic people to self determination" No cession of powers: They confirmed there will be no formal transfer of foreign policy or resource control to Washington, and that Greenland's self governance will continue Security benefits: The agreement allows the US to develop a significant military presence in Greenland, including new bases at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig, while prohibiting US adversaries from establishing military installations or making sensitive investments there without US approval. Not sure how he's going to build and man these at no cost to the American taxpayer? NATO and regional stability: Danish Foreign Minister Lars L kke Rasmussen said the deal "strengthens security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic while respecting the Kingdom's red lines" Greenland's view: Nielsen called the agreement a "win win win" that benefits Greenland, Denmark, the US, and Europe He knows Greenland isn't actually as big as Africa, right?.... |
| All Trump was saying from the outset is that we needed a LOT more defense on our northern flank. He would be chastised and laughed at. Then he responded that the purchase offer was for our defense due to 'unfriendly' encroachments. NATO wasn't responding, nor was Denmark (sorry DK). That wasn't the right answer. |
