I have a TroyBilt Pony circa 2016 that is my problem child I got used last year for cheap and I've been having issues on and off Recently while mowing it seems to have developed a surge in RPMs while running. I have to keep the engine throttle at FULL to keep her running, anything less and it will die I took the Carburetor off and cleaned it along with the spark plug, and no real change. Seems I have a gravity fed Carburetor as it has no solenoid I took some videos today showing the issue, any help is appreciated  craig24680 Mower1  Craig24680 Mower 2 As of 5/7 issue is believed fixed New carb AND errant seed in gas tank restricting flow |

I would find a new carb first and replace the old one. They are really cheap and easy to swap. Do not buy OEM, as they are NOT cheap. I've had good luck with Hipa brand. Make sure you have a good gasket/O-ring between the carb and the intake manifold. Second, I would check the adjustment of the governor. | If you close the choke a bit, does it run better? If so, you still don't have the run jet cleaned completely. Over running [revving] is a governor issue, surging, almost always a fuel issue. [Old Kohlers were well known for governor runaway issues due to them breaking internally] |

Good replies and it gives me a way forward I haven't adjusted the carb as I've never really messed with one before. I know from research one one changed mine from solenoid to gravity fed carb The wire for the solenoid is not present and finding a diagram is hard. I'll buy new carb and modify it for gravity fed per YouTube directions and see how it goes. Yes the mower has manual fuel shut off |

Bought new Amazon carb and installed Seems to be running much better after my fly by night adjustments I can throttle up and down on the mower and the engine responds accordingly. No surging or wild RPMs swings This was tested in driveway Haven't had chance to get on grass yet due to life and rain But at this time I believe the issue is fixed Thanks all |

Previous post was wrong Issue wasn't resolved More troubleshooting and came to find out a little black seed worked its way into the fuel tank severely restricting the flow of gas Got it out and I believe it's finally fixed Couple more uses will determine for sure. |

Sounds like a fuel/jetting issue (I know you say you cleaned the carb). I've had jets get clogged with solid pieces of junk, and no matter how much I sprayed them out with carb cleaner and compressed air...they didn't butch. Had to use one of those welding tip wire cleaners to poke the crap out of the jets. Maybe try pulling the carb off and taking a really close look at the jets and small orifice passages in the carb. Sounds like something is still clogged. |

I know this advice is late, but on an older small engine... Fix it Fuel...it works and you'd be shocked by how much it can solve. Run a tank through. If you have leaks or just want to freshen up the fuel system...Mechanic in a bottle. I know its simple, but running it through the fuel system at full strength can solve a TON of issues. I never would have though it works, but I used it and it really did help. |
