I'm waiting on a title for a little dump trailer. Long story short is it's a great deal but the seller lost the title and has submitted for a new one with the DMV who says 4-6 weeks. Means I have plenty of time to figure out other parts of this. I don't really want to do any wiring in the truck. Truck is old so no fancy plug and play stuff like the 2000+ trucks generally have. I already have a 7 pin wired in with power but it is hard wired, not the little connector to the larger 7 pin as some newer rigs support. Also thinking about if friends pull the trailer they would have brakes without needing a controller in their truck. Was looking at brake controllers that mount on the trailer. The 2 I've been looking at are the Autowbrake and the Tekonsha Prodigy RF. The autobrake sounds OK but has some flaws. The remote apparently sometimes looses connection but folks seem happy with it when they get it all set up. The Tekonsha is the one I want but it is $$$ and much more difficult to find. Can find them pretty decently prices on eBay though. Any other thoughts? Should I just do it and wire one into the truck? |

The adjustment and manual brake are wireless. The rest is on the trailer, powered by the truck. I have looked there a little. The wireless ones are hit or miss. Not a feature I'd want in a piece of safety equipment. I got one of the universal wiring kits from etrailer to wire my old truck. It comes with all the wiring and circuit breakers. All you need to do is give it power, ground, and one site of the brake light switch. I zip tied the wires up along the frame from front to back. Just don't have a brake controller as most trailers I've towed either have non functional brakes or are 4 pin. Having functional brakes will be a treat! The curt one requires an app and smartphone. Instant "hell no" from me. Currently looking at either the Tekonsha Prodigy RF or the Redarc Pro Tow Liberty. The Tekonsha seems to be highly regarded but does require the remote to be powered when using it. The Redarc is an Australian brand. The liberty is basic but that all I need. |
