I haven't purchased cigars from a NJ tobacconist in years, online purchasing only. I was near a shop that I haven't been to in forever JR cigars in Whippany nj , they are now callied Casa de Montecristo. Same exact setup as JR's just a name change , so I thought. Picked out a Padron Pyramide price tag $19.80. The register receipt printed out $27.12 . After questioning that I was informed of the NJ state imposed 30% tobacco tax plus the sales tax. Won't do that again. I'm assuming this why JR pulled out. If someone wants a full box of anything in the state the numbers are stupid. A box of 25 1964 Padron Pyramide at $495. Puls 37% tax $183.15 comes to $678.15 Anyone else have this ridiculous stupidity in your state.?  |

At first I read it as ''Tobasco tax''........................whew............. Yeah, baccy taxes are crack to states, frankly they all hope it's never made illegal or they are going to lose out on hundreds of millions or billions of dollars ''for the chilren.'' |

I spent 10 years as the spokesman for the state tax department under a Republican governor who actually cut taxes. Since then I’ve done some work for the states tobacconists and my fraternity brother started pipesandcigars.com that was purchased by CI. So yes, I am familiar with the industry and the tax structure. |

How do local shops stay in business?. It’s a struggle. My local go to still does some online retail out of state so the excise tax does not apply to those sales - typically wholesale plus 20%. We also have a lounge membership that is $100 a month and includes $75 in credit so that is a guaranteed $900 in sales per year minimum per member. We all spend a couple grand at least a year anyway. They also do creative events to bring the members in regularly like “Vinyl Sundays” where we come in, smoke cigars, drink espresso, and listen to jazz and classic rock. When folks are there they tend to spend money, and it also brings in non-members. The owner is also very good to his staff. Pays well above minimum wage, provides health insurance, and a retirement plan which is unheard of for retail. |
