I currently have an old craftsman and the rail that goes between the motor and the wall is starting to develop spots where the trolly will catch. I tried smoothing them over but after 30 years, she is just wearing out. Its causing the door to shake and bounce when the trolly goes over the spots. What is a quality replacement system? |

Mine had been going out for a bit, finally died about 8-9 months ago. I just lock the door with a Wood Clamp from Lowes and open/close it by hand. I can't bring myself to spend the cake for a good one. |

The Liftmaster jackshaft recomended above is the popular choice due to ease of installing, not blocking the ceiling, and being very quiet. Just make sure you have enough torsion rod length sticking out past the drum on the side you want to install it. Google a youtube video or two and you should get a pretty good idea of it. If power or anything else is going to make it a logistical nightmare to do a jackshaft, than a 3/4HP belt drive DC motor trolley style. I'd stick with Liftmaster for ease of parts and service. Note here though, that the door height is very important. You need to know if your door is taller than the standard 7' to know what rail length your going to need. I'd also recommend sourcing from a local garage door retailer vs. big box like Lowes or HD, especially if you go the standard trolley route. That way you get a solid single piece rail instead of the rail made form 18" pieces snapped together. |

I really wanted to try one of these but the local door companies said they were very unreliable. Look simple and easy to install, IMHO. Ended up replacing my 40 year old chain drive with a belt, 16 x 8 insulated door. |

This Genie is even tied into my SmartThings Home Automation (Chamberlin couldn't do that. Proprietary API). I have routines that auto close it at 9 at night and 10 minutes after my wife leaves for work in the morning. Also, when I drive into the driveway, my phone opens the garage door.
