Read this book in the 80's. Saw the movie but meh, the book was a lot better. Glad to see MrBallen do one of his videos on it. If you are not aware of this story, here is a short synopsis: Eastern flight 401, takes off from JFK to MIA, the landing gear indicator malfunctions and while the crew is all engaged in this $0.25 malfunction, the pilot accidently disengages the autopilot causing the plane to crash in the Everglades. The useable parts that were salvaged from the crash were used on sister L-1011's, passengers and crew of those planes started to notice ghosts on their flights. Some of those stories are pretty fucking freaky. Ballen does a good job of telling this story, but the book has obviously more "in depth" stories that are crazy. Enjoy! Oxygen generators in a box lit off and burned the plane in the air |
Very interesting. I heard of the crash, not the paranormal activity associated with it. The L1011's were cool airplanes, the engines were louder than normal from what I remember. I worked at CVG for Dobbs and catered quite a few of them for Delta. Never saw a ghost.

One of my friends that happened to be one of the surviving victims asked me to proofread and correct his story (punctuation and spelling were atrocious) and it really raises the hairs on the back of your neck. I happen to know half the people in the story that were injured or murdered. My friend eventually passed away. He says that he reads all of his direct messages on his social media accounts and I think he says that he has a Reddit page for submitting story ideas. |
Watching the 401 video now. | They say the same thing about the Lady Be Good. B-24 that went down in the Libyan desert during WWII. They took off on a mission to bomb Italy and turned around to headed back to base and flew deep into the desert thinking they hadn't got there yet. They ran out of fuel and the crew jumped before the plane crashed. The airplane landed pretty decently and the tail broke off. The crew wandered deeper thinking they were still headed towards their base when in fact, they were headed further south away from the base. They all died of dehydration. An oil company helicopter found the plane in the 60's and the Air Force found some, but not all, of the crew and recovered parts of the aircraft. They reused some parts on airplanes still in service and those planes that got parts of Lady Be Good were said to be haunted from that point forward. |

The L-1011 is what put Rolls-Royce really into the large jet engine business, of course RR had to go into bankruptcy to do it, then it was Lockheed's turn with a bankruptcy and bailout. Very advanced airliner. |

It burned almost straight in, killed everyone. Somewhere I have pics of the recorders from it. It was interesting to be able to handle them and look them over. They were pretty beat up. |
| My Dad was flying Electra's for EAL at the time 401 went in, and transitioned to B727s after the Electra's retirement. Then he flew 1011s, and had an incident once where parts of 401 were discovered in the galley by a spooked flight attendant. He instructed the mechanics to "Get that sh*t out of here!", as the FA had no intention of going back into the galley until it was gone. Thanks for the memories, OP. I miss Eastern. |

I'm racking my brain to imagine what kind of parts could be reused from a crashed plane in a galley and the flight attendant would recognize it as such. I don't think I've ever had a flight attendant that could tell the difference between a flat head screwdriver and a philips head. A coffee carafe is about the only thing I could think of. But how would you know it came off 401? Fuck, I'd love to know what parts of 401 are claimed to have been pulled out of the mud for reuse. How'd they test them and certify their airworthiness? |

Well told story of flight 401 - very spooky and fun. I had never heard of the lower level crew lounge and did some more internet snooping about it. Turns out almost none of the airlines ordered them. Something like only 5 airframes got built with the lounge and none of them went to Eastern. | I have no further details, Dad passed away years ago so not able to get more details. Might have been a part as innocuous as an oven door that the FA recognized or some other part. Dad knew which planes he flew always had issues, and they all had their own personality for lack of better terms. I know FAs that would complain about certain ones that the ovens always malfunctioned, or whatever, so did not think at the time to probe for further specifics. It was over thirty years ago i heard the story. |
