I'm looking to build a home security/monitoring system using MotionEye. Needs to be all-local, no subscriptions, no cloud nonsense, no telemetry. MotionEye was originally designed around Raspberry Pi's but apparently it can work with any RTMP IP camera, which sounds much more convenient. I'm looking into DIY options using Raspberry Pi Zero's, but I have concerns about cooling and I don't know if I'm up to designing a case that can handle outdoor weather in the long run. Eventually I want to get 3 - 4 outdoor IP cameras for security and doorway monitoring, but I don't know what to get. Everything is flooded with cheap Chinese crap with no QC. I tried a couple and they died after about 2 minutes of use (at least Amazon returns are easy). What do you guys recommend for affordable, reliable, no-nonsense outdoor-rated PoE IP cameras that can do RTMP streams? My ultimate plan is to set up a local MotionEye server, hook all the PoE cameras to it, and maybe do some custom development for a dashboard, phone app, and/or notifications. It'll record for security purposes when I'm away, and hopefully provide notifications when someone's at the door or delivering something. Think Ring/etc. but local and private. All IP cameras will get stuck into their own VLAN that has no access to anything, not even the Internet. That way if anyone physically tampers with the LAN cables, they won't have access to anything, plus it'll block any outgoing telemetry/spyware stuff. Obviously I'll have a firewall rule to allow the MotionEye server to access the RTMP streams on the camera VLAN. |

10 years ago i bought a $500 package from GreatWall https://gwsecurityusa.com/support/,, 8 cameras , and NVR and the 8 channel POE It's performed fabulously, my guess is most IP cameras are made in china so they probably have similar quality. But with POE you need CAT5 wired, POE carries a small voltage to the camera. |

The local conservation club installed cameras on the range and uses Blue Iris on a PC set up as a DVR. The high MP cameras eat up memory and require more storage space. Blue Iris has a demo version available. |

UPDATE: I got one of these, and it works just fine with MotionEye which is running in a Linux VM. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CM39LZH4 I already have a custom "dashboard" app I run on my phone and on a mini-PC hooked up to a TV, which typically shows weather/calendar stuff. The UI toolkit I have supports RTSP streams in its media viewer control, and the MotionEye server software can call arbitrary web endpoints or local shell scripts in response to motion detected/motion ended events, so (networking/VLAN/firewall issues aside) it should be pretty simple for me to add some scheduling/alerting to my existing stuff to show camera feeds when something happens. |

I have 4 Hikvision 4K POE cameras installed for about 10 years now. They came with an 16 port NVR in a package at Costco. Over the years, I've added another 3 cameras, including a license plate camera. Yeah, I know Hikvision is Chinese and I think they're banned for import now. I don't care. They're on their own VLAN and can't phone home. They're been great for many years. |

ETA: I use the Hikvision phone app for remote viewing. I have PiVPN/Pihole running on a Pi4 at home. So I just fire up Wireguard on my phone, connect to my home VPN and then the phone app loads up the camera images/footage like it's local. No need to have any cloud hosting or leakage of my home cameras. Added bonus: PiHole ad filtering on my phone, even on 5G. |
