I went to the Arizona State vs. A&M game. Some takeaways. Aggie defense is confused. A LOT. Lining up wrong/late. Secondary moving around, freaking out because they have trips to one side and only 2 defenders. I'm hopeful about this, because it's easily fixable. Unless the players are retards? O line is bad. They're pretty good at passpro, but aren't moving anyone in the run game. Sometimes they just don't block anyone. I'm not talking about dropping guys on games or blitzes, they just line up and bring 4 straight ahead, and the line oles them all. And this is against what I assume is a below average defense from ASU. Anyone that doesn't know what Marcel Reed is by this point is retarded. The guy is innacurate, has ZERO anticipation, makes bad reads and bad decisions often. Carrys the ball like a loaf of bread at all times. Footwork and mechanics go out the window if anything exciting happens. Hot take: He's not a good runner. He's electric in the open field, but he's not fast, is weak (easily brought down), and jukes WAY too much. *Full disclosure, I've been a D1 hater since he won the starting job at the LSU game 2 years ago. Folks thought he was great, it was really just Brian Kelly being a terrible coach. It looks to me like the Dline is a big step down from last year. Inside and out. Pass rush was non existent until the 4th quarter. Some of the run problem was bad angles/leverage, and blown contain, all of which is fixable, but they don't have any real studs at end like they usually have. LB corps is an improvement overall, big improvement on the run, off a little on coverage and pass rush. Receivers got a lot of separation, which doesn't matter a lot when the QB can't throw. DBs were out of phase at times, but I think they'll be fine. I don't know why we're not moving on at QB. Hopefully it's not because the next two guys are worse. |

Hopefully it's not because the next two guys are worse. i suspect its because the players support reed since they voted him as a captain, plus the new OC likes him. but i agree with everything else. reed flashes signs of truly exceptional passing ability 2 or 3 times a game. then misses what should be easy throws. at this point in his career that shouldnt happen. those bad decisions and bad throws are what caused so many INTs last year and probably will again when the opponents get better. on defense - what surprised me was so many missed tackles, especially in the first half. maybe that was from bad angles like you mention, but an elko team has to be better than that |
