A guitar thread over in GD got me to thinking. I needed/wanted to change strings on my new to me McPherson acoustic-(cause I’m too old now to buy new guitars. )

They come with Medium Elixer nanowebs and all I had at the ranch were light gage. This guitar is built for Mediums with a carbon fibre neck blank/rod. It’s a heavy guitar built like a brick shithouse….but WOW that tone!!!!
So I put a set of medium DAddarrio XS’s on. Those have been my Go-To strings for years now….and while they sound good-I could hear the difference. It was a difference I could live with but it was somehow-lesser.

So, I hitched up the team, grabbed the wife, and drove across state lines to the local brick and mortar store.

They didn’t have any.

Having tried almost every brand out there at one time or another and everything else being “lesser” than D’Addarrio’s (the only strings my luthier recommends) I was bummed.

But rather than waste a trip into the big city and knowing with the wife wasn’t going to tolerate another guitar in the house at the moment I scanned the string choices.

Stringjoy?  I’ve heard some buzz about them…. Do you have them in a Medium gage?

Back at the ranch I opened the box and tore open the individually wrapped strings. Made in TN with words like “perfect” in their product statement caused me to smile a little-sure you are?

I strung them up(they are several inches longer than any other brand)-tuned and…..

WOW!
They live up to their hype.

Bonus feature is I can now almost justify buying another guitar with a short scale so I can put all my other gently used strings on.

TLDR; Stringjoy acoustic guitar strings are amazing.

Which set?
Balanced tension?

They are the Foxwoods. Attached File

I haven’t used “tension” sets. I know some builders recommend them, Santa Cruz, for example.
Having flunked physics in the 4th grade but having built more than a hundred race bike wheels using spokes (I’m old) I have some understanding of tension and it seems to me that for that to be true with guitar strings and work —everything would have to be consistently perfect ALWAYS-including environmental considerations.
I seem to remember there was a pretty good discussion a couple years ago in this forum regarding that.

From Stringjoys website;

“ How is String Tension Calculated?

String tension is a product of a string's mass, the pitch it's tuned to, and the string's scale length. Increasing any of these factors will increase string tension, and decreasing any of them will decrease string tension, simple as that.

Why Are Your Numbers Different than Other String Tension Calculators?

These numbers are based on our own measurements of Stringjoy strings. They will be different than other companies' measurements because we make our strings differently than other companies.

I also want to note that any string tension calculator is working off of averages. Strings are man-made, and as such small variations are always present from one string to another which will cause micro-changes to how a string responds.”

If I were tuning in a shop environment or maybe a big time recording studio I could see using a tensioner along with a gee whiz strobe tuner but I play live…. And there are a bazillion other factors that factor into what others hear by the time what ever noise I’m making gets to them so I just use clip on tuners.

They make strings for all the things. I would be curious/interested to hear someone’s opinion of them on a Strat or Hollow Body electric.
