It would be nice if sight staff would prevent retro and the A2 forums from getting scrubbed when going into archive. There's a ton of knowledge on these forums and the information is fading with them. Also allow image hosting on them. I can't tell you how many times I've tried to look something up and Photobucket or imgur links are dead. I'll kick in for a terabyte hard drive for this. Excluding a data partition, that would roughly hold a quarter-million 4 MB photos. |

While I assume this site uses AWS, Azure or GCP (either directly, or indirectly), server storage has speed and redundancy requirements for storage that are not even remotely like a desktop or USB backup drive. It's a LOT more expensive and for their likely web and storage hosts, it's a perpetual operating expense, not a one-time purchase of a piece of hardware. Usually, the best way to help with that is to become a paid site member at whatever level you are willing to do so. Also, there is a forum for "Site Suggestions and Help" where staff would be much more likely to see your request about archiving, and more likely to respond. It's certainly possible to prevent archiving, as several of the sub forums have that turned on, and much more likely for them to enable that for a sub-forum with less traffic like this one. What I envision is something similar to what TAPR has done with the Time-Nuts mailing list. Now as to the feasibility getting data out of AWS i have no idea. The other point is not as widely known. The TAPR booth was showing off a project from the Time-Nuts (aka Time Lords) in which the entire Time-Nuts email mailing list (going back 30 years) was combined with additional Time-Nuts documentation and indexed by an LLM. The result was a locally running instance of an AI assistant capable of returning answers relevant to any question related to precise time keeping. Hopefully this tool will be available to a wider audience, soon. We're likely to see more examples of libraries of information being made available in similar fashion. I assumed more overhead and logistics to the request, but more brought it up to garner incentive for the request. It's been a while, but I have held memberships in the past/bought merch etc. and expect to in the future. But also isn't this thread in the site suggestions category, or is there another one I'm missing? |

What in particular are you talking about in regard to scrubbing? Yes, we scrub user specific info to protect members but we don't scrub images or the body of their posts. https://www.ar15.com/forums/ar-15/Retro-look-CAR-15/123-786607/ If your comment is specific to image hosting, above is an example of an archived thread which has retained all the images except for those from post #14. Those were hosted on imgur and there's nothing we can do in regards to retaining those as they're hosted elsewhere. The same will go for flickr or other image hosting sites. Opening image hosting to every account isn't as simple as tossing in a 1TB HDD as jtb33 mentioned and would increase hosting fees. It's possible we open it up in the future, but it's not currently planned. Anyway, images hosted by us do not get scrubbed.
