In order to break up the monotony of doing BJJ all the time, I've decided to dip my toe back into the FMA world. Found a Balintawak instructor not too far from where I work so I'm going to do privates, likely once every two weeks, in order to expand my martial horizons. I did a bit of Modern Arnis years ago but havent had any real instruction in it since the early 2000s. Who else does FMA? |

I did for about 7 years. Really enjoyed it. Dog Brothers Martial Arts. It helped to bridge the gap in my more traditional martial arts training. The foot work really helped me to close and I would find myself in a position I had been in during my traditional stuff. Really fun. Some of the hubud type drills might help with arm entanglements in a grappling scenario. Have fun and of course YMMV |

Funny that this came back up. Since making the original post I switched to a different Balintawak instructor and started doing weekly privates. I'm due to test for my Levels 1 and 2 certifications with GM Taboada next week. I've also started training 1-2 a week in Kalis Illustrisimo with a former student of Topher Ricketts. |

Level 1 and 2 test completed and passed. It was the first time I had seen GM Taboada in person since maybe 2003 and the first time I had actually tested under him. It was a bit more difficult than I was expecting but I think that might be due to 2 other people testing for Level 3 and 4 were on the floor with me at the same time so I was getting grilled just like they were. Good times! I do need to talk to my trainer about stick diameter though. I seem to be using larger sticks (1") while everyone else seems to use smaller ones. |
