I bought this South Bend 10k Friday. Having never used a SB I've been familiarizing myself with it's operation and reading the SB handbook. I am unsure what this item is behind the headstock. Anyone know what this is for?  Pictures to make some of you envious.

Mine is one of the late models too. The later models might have additional features such as that pocket the tool is in. A tag on frame indicates it has flame hardened ways. I can't remove the item by lifting up as the rod is long and it hits the head stock cover. I am going to see if I can loosen the set screw in the collar and remove from the drive motor enclosure. |

Originally Posted By User55645: I believe it's a mechanical interlock so the cover can't be opened while the belt is under tension. There is a hole above that would allow the rod to contact the head stock cover so that is a possibility. There does not appear to be a mechanism in the drive motor enclosure that would engage it when the belt is placed under tension. If it had to be manually engaged that would explain why it looks like it was rarely used. |

| @User55645 is correct in his assertion that it is part of an interlock that keeps the headstock cover closed when tension is on the belt. I found it on the parts diagram for the cabinet belts drive system. It's not currently functioning and I don't plan on making it functional. |
