Yes....@wildboar "partial afterburner" is possible, and @vmax84 "full afterburner" is a thing, although the correct terminology would be "MIN afterburner" through "MAX afterburner".

I dont know what B1s do but the Eagle was either mil power or full AB depending on runway and weight / ordinance. Of course if you were in a training configuration and it was winter and you wanted to be airborne in 600 feet you could just takeoff in AB for fun even if you did not need to .

Also on a Scramble it would be AB for min time and climb even on  a CONUS Alert scramble with limited ordinance.

The saudi have nice toys.  That 15SA they lost this week were some of the best Eagles in the world until the EX.  The EX appears to be a monster as far as capability goes, like a super strike eagle.

They haven't been all that successful against the Houthi in the past however.  Their air force is probably the most professional branch and I've never heard too many glowing reviews from people that have worked with them.

Maybe our resident eagle guys can chime in.

There's a video with a female f15 pilot and she talks about a safety wired override switch. Undo safety wire flip switch and get out in a hurry. It overrides some safeties or something to allow some extra boost but requires A LOT on inspections after.

I'm assuming it's true since she was a pilot giving a cockpit walkthrough.

It is the VMax switch and is prohibited to use. It trashes the engines, but that switch allowed mcD to meet the contractual performance criteria

Saudi's and most Middle East militaries aren't great.  They can have nice shit but if you don't train, get your tactics down (and keep refining them), you are predictable - add in the intelligence aspect of knowing what to hit / where to hit it / when / etc, and you can even have a bunch of badasses, but they are limited because they don't know where to hit.

The Vmax switch you are referring to on an F-15 won't do anything until you are supersonic and even then it's not a significant increase.

I didn't know we played Mig-25 games with Vmax.

With the new engines the rumor or public statement about the EX is that it's faster if it's ever clean.  But they didn't bump the stated top speed. still 2.5.   So maybe it's now 2.5 but the engines don't melt.

Lots of UN meetings this week & Xi. I wouldn't think powers would want to kick something off during that. Bibi likely voted out in a month. Dems ascendent here in a few months. Things starting to feel dynamic. A different Izzy government isn't going to feel much different about Gaza or Iran. Something seems to be forcing DJT's hand on 'annihilating Iran'. You'd think we can just starve them out. I suspect no oil for the rest of the world and Saudi susceptibility to Houti attacks are a big part of it. Europe has about 70% of supplies of natural gas, and they'll start to draw that down in weeks. Factor in lower incoming amounts, less diesel, less heating oil - could be a tough winter.

The F-15EX uses GE-129 engines just like the F-15Ks we sold South Korea back in 2005. An F-15E with PW-229 (or GE-129) engines can easily supercruise clean.

How much time does the B-1 have left? They were getting creaky years ago and spare parts are kinda hard to come by.

Probably depends entirely on when the B-21 goes into full production, though it seems that program is well ahead of schedule.

But did they ever actually take that stuff out? I can see them removing a switch from the cockpit but leaving the wire in place and connected to the actuator in the bomb bay. Just pop that little cover off, plug in that old switch, reattach the label, and Mustafa is your uncle.

If it's like other old, many times upgraded platforms, there is probably all manner of wires in the dash that don't do anything anymore.

I've seen stats on wiring in the buff.  It's an impressive mess.

Uncle sugar is rather particular about authorizing the release of crowd pleasers.  There are specific systems required.  It changes and obviously they don't talk about it much but it's not as easy as dropping a JDAM. At least that's my understanding.   And like others have said, she's entering her twilight years.  We have other systems to get that job done.

That speed is often not a thrust issue.  It's a shit starts to glow issue.  I mean the F22 has more thrust than the SR-71, weighs way less,  it'll do 1.8 without any burner.  But still taps out well under 3.  I doubt the skin would survive.

Plus inlet geometry becomes a serious issue.  There are inlets that work well under mach 2 and inlets that work over mach 2.  Its rare to have one that can do both well.   Same goes for engines. Hence the 71s essentially hybrid ramjet.  J58s were pretty amazing in their day....still are really.

Newer designs are trending toward hybrid combined cycle again for this same reason.  If you wan to take off under power you need a turbofan, if you want to go mach3 or faster you need something else.

I doubt the EX can get to 3 for this reason, if it can it's on the hairy edge of breaking something.

The inlet design was one of the major changes to the Bone between the A and B programs.  The B is actually faster on the deck than the A even though the A was roughly twice as fast at altitude.  They also massively suppressed the RCS due to that change.  Turbofan blades make really good radar reflectors and the B inlet masked them better.

Hell, all I did was shop at their PX and uniform store because we shared some things.  We were tight like that.

Engines purp and  as soon as the pressurization fails with engine failures, which is pretty much immediately, all the gas comes out of his blood and he dead. He had no pressure suit. I have only been to 55,000 with no pressure suit, but I was only doing 1.8 well within engine parameters.

Xi is coming to the US and apparently China is pressuring Iran to quit blowing up refineries in Saudi Arabia.  That's all I got.
