Pedaling from a near stop in a high gear. Blam crank arm snapped right in half. It was a fun walk home.    Yes I learned today that Shimano has a recall on the crank arm. Mine made it 31-years. |

If you DIY the replacement, that allen screw will be hard to remove. I did it by putting the remover tool on it, tightening it, then pouring boiling water on the crank. This expanded it enough to loosen it to a point where mere humans can remove it. Good luck. (My application was with a touring bicycle.) |

Back in the 90's Cannondale had their own line of components. The crank arms were milled or cast with a webbed slot on the inside to make them lighter. A local bike mechanic had one snap in the middle and it imbedded in his calf. Cannondale gave him a new bike. I know this because I bought his old bike and changed the crankset.
