My son has completed his Jr. year in ROTC and will be at Ft. Richardson in August. He's been told his name has been put in for this testing.

What's he have to look forward to? His nav skills are really good and he's physically fit. He's also a STEM major on dean's list.

How hard is the process? What should he concentrate on?

Most things will be PT and attention to detail.

My battalion did a scout tryout once and it had nothing to do with problem solving or anything complicated.

Granted, that's an example of one, but it's not RASP or anything.

Sounds like they are letting him, an ROTC Cadet, go through a platoon level indoc for an Infantry BN's Scout platoon?

Who knows, since there's no official "selection" for such a thing and it's homegrown. Likely will include a PT test, rucking, maybe some land nav, perhaps some skills testing, etc.

Or is this a Spur Ride?

In the end, he isn't gonna suddenly become a Scout PL or anything. Sounds like they are just including him in some training.

If it's a spur ride, he will be given a certificate and inducted into the Order of the Spur (unofficial thing) if he completes it.

However, it's a great opportunity to move beyond some canned training and actually interact with folks who want to be better than average.
