I’ll be real honest, fuck smith, terrible customer service, shitty Hilary holes, mag disconnects etc But held a mountain gun last week and I liked it. Brought me back to the old days Is it going to disappoint me? Trigger isn’t python good but better than other smiths |

In for answers too. I got a 629 and a 329PD. The 629 has been flawless over a k of rounds except for the cylinder button coming off. I had to put thread locker on it. The 329 is a range toy, but it’s had quite a few light primer strikes. Still a pleasant joy to shoot. |

I have an 90's .44 mag mountain gun and it is great - been great since day one. Bought a new mountain gun in .357 and .22 lr. The .357 had some issues with the action not working correctly - root cause ended up being rough edges on some of the internals and debris that looked like metal shavings inside the action. Cleaned it out and stoned the rough spots, lubed it with FP10. That fixed it. If you can inspect it before buying = that is what I would do even if I had to pay a bit more. I don't have confidence in someone who would send the revolver out the door like that to fix it = should have never happened. The .22 worked fine but was really filthy out of the box like it got polished but never wiped down after - cleaned it up with WD40, lubed it with FP10 and good to go. I think that at S&W it is the little things and details that is really taking away from the goodness of their products - they need professionals not assemblers. If you get one - good luck. |

S&W is having their issues for sure but they can still make a nice revolver. If you decide you want to take your chances on one, dust off your "thorough, in person, inspection" skills and go for it! New 610 Mountain Gun is excellent in terms of fit and finish. Great trigger in both SA/DA, barrel installed straight, timing and lockup appear to be spot on. Only "problem" is a barrel/cylinder gap is a very tight .002" so that might be a thing when it heats up although, I'd rather the gap be too tight rather than too loose.  |

I like mine. Shoots better than I can shoot it. No issues whatsoever. I shoot it a lot and it is my favorite revolver. I'm also waiting for Smith to make it in .45 Colt and wish they would hurry up. Attached File |

I've had a so-so experience with a newer 629-6 (which has been traded) and kept the 329. I have the hillary hole filler from TK, just haven't put it in yet. Other than constantly shooting the ejector rod loose, despite having red thread locker in it, it's been a joy. I've put around 450 rounds through it. It's not a mountain gun, but I'd recommend it. I used to say that I never met an N-frame I didn't like, but that's not the case now. |

I have two relatively recent Smiths. A 629 4in, that has been fantastic with an excellent out of the box trigger. I bought it prob 5-7yrs ago. A 686+ 5in Talo, it had to immediately go back to SW as the timing was off and wouldnt fire through all cylinders. SW took care of it in about 4wk turnaround. It has been 100% since coming back and is also a fantastic shooter. I bought it last year. I honestly wouldnt hesitate to buy another SW. Both guns have great triggers and nice fit and finish. That said, I have seen plenty of pool QC guns slip through. |

I've heard some folks complain about QC issues on the new ones. Barrel alignment IIRC. Maybe something to do with alignment of the grip panels too. I'm sure if you google it, the complaints can be found. What are they?.... 3 to 4 ounces lighter than same barrel length in standard model? Othewise its a 29 with catchy logo and some swell grips (if the current-production grips don't have a QC issue). The taper-barrel is pretty. I have a four-inch 29-2 (non "Mountain Gun"). If I'm shooting MAGNUM ammo, I'm glad for every ounce it has. I think the internet has forgotten how much a full-power 44 magnum recoils. And MUZZLE BLAST. I think the new ones DO NOT have a Hillary Hole. Some of the older ones don't have a HH either. A friend of mine bought the first version when they came out in the 80's. Serious problem with cylinder counter-rotation on recoil when firing full power 44 magnum ammo. Good feature for working on your flinch. My 29 is not an EDC - but I won't disrespect it by calling it a "range toy." Its certainly not photogenic by any comparative standard. I like to run a load that allows me to shoot more than one cylinder before the bones in my forearm start squawking. The mountain gun grips are Skeeter-Skelton-nostalgic I might have to get a set someday. In the meantime, the ugly pach's help some with recoil. Attached File Attached File |

My understanding is that when they moved from Springfield, MA down to Tennessee, they lost some (I don't know the %) of their experienced smiths who put the new guns together because they didn't want to move. This resulted in a less experienced staff and I think the QC issues are a result of that. Hopefully, over the course of time skills will improve as will QC. |

Former employees are members here and have posted what the issues are. The QC is almost nonexistent, they only want you there if you can hit certain productivity numbers. If you can't assemble guns properly in allotted time you won't continue working there. Send it out the door. People who care and want to take their time to correct issues and put out well built guns aren't welcome there. |

I think I read somewhere that they were hiring-out the production on the "Roper" grip panels for the current crop of Mountain Guns. I would guess that the contractor does the best they can, and the assembler slaps them on without giving any further thought. Probably "some fitting required" (for the customer) if they want perfect fitment of the grips. Or maybe get lucky and they are good right out of the box. Just don't assume that they will be. I bought a set of used "Magna's" for my dash-2. I bet the Mountain Gun would look good with a set of classic Magna's "Some fitting required." I thought I had an "after" pic around here of my "fitting." Maybe I'll dig through my phone. All I could find right away is the pre-fitting pic. The Ropers on the Mountain Gun probably fit better.
