Ballsy, but Russia is big, uusk looks to be fairly remote. It’s also around 7500ft and icy, so the pilots were on their game that day. They said 101 fuel capacity, if that’s kg then we’re talking about a fighter with 220 pounds of fuel which isn’t believable. I wonder if their fuel is in 10s of kg so it would be 1010kg or 2200 pounds which is still dangerously low in a jet that size. Google says mig31 internal fuel capacity is over 30k pounds. |

I’m glad that mess all worked out without any injuries or bent metal. Also, it’s nice to see some successful procedural improvisation in a time of need. Standards go a long way to ensure safety, but that doesn’t mean that no standard operations can’t be done safely as well. That being said, the audio here gives me a renewed appreciation for the level of radio discipline and professionalism that we have in the U.S. national airspace system. |
