The 84' Hurst Olds and 85-87 442 along with the 84-87 Buick turbo cars were the only G-Bodies to get the 8.5" rear end. The 8.5" rear exists because of a 1982 developed 5 speed Olds concept that got axed last minute in 1984. The only reason Olds still got the 8.5" was because the Cutlass was supposed to be the blacked out specialty car, not the GN. The FE3X Cutlass concept looked like a GNX and was the first ready for production car GM made to hold over 1G on the skid pad. GM decided they wanted a car to go fast in a straight line instead of a road course so they amped up the 3.8 with an inter cooler and gave Buick the black out treatment instead. They even gave Buick the "X" too. https://i.ibb.co/0Q8YmqN/9-B913-A05-0-FB3-4-D63-A8-EB-94-E172188-A5-D.jpg Yes, Hurst Olds 442 with the pace car package and a W30. It's a pretty rare car. If I remember correctly there were less than 2k built and only a few hundred with the W30. |

Very few had the turbo package. 1984 introduced the sequential fuel injection and the turbo came standard. This was when they went black and got the 8.5” rear. 1986 introduced the intercooler. 1987 was the last year of the G-Body Grand National, and only year for the GNX. The non GN turbo Regals got the same schedule for the intercooler, fuel injection, and rear end. |

But they are awesome cars. |

I've done at least 87 regulators in my two GTPs. I used to have a broom handle notched and cut to length. When one goes out I can jam it in there until I can get the part. Other than the shitty regulators, they're pretty reliable cars. The typhoons and cyclones we're cool cars. I never owned one but I had a good customer that did. I did have a 97 GMC C1500 with the 4.3 that I supercharged with a Paxton style blower. It was pretty awesome. Not only was it faster than a stock V8, I got crazy fuel economy. If I could keep my foot out of it, I would get over 600 miles to a tank. |
| So, another delay(s). The tank came in Sunday afternoon. I started putting the pump in and decided to proactively replace the cheap looking hose with a section of high dollar R10 hose. We'll, I snapped the nipple off the pump. What a dumbass. No biggie, I'll order another. It comes in and has a different casting number. Fe0115 vs the 0039. Down the rabbit hole. Amazon's catalog is wrong. 18 psi vs 50. FML. The new, new replacement should be here by the weekend. |
|
Finally some progress. Had the pump and tank assembly ready to go in and figured it was a good time to clean out the lines. Attached File I pulled the fuel filter and the fuel rail. The injectors were nasty. Attached File Attached File Then I flushed the fuel lines with carb cleaner and blew them out with air. I cleaned the fuel rail and installed new 60# injectors. Attached File Attached File I left the regulator off so I can flush the system a little more before I try and fire it. I want to make sure I get all the crap out of there. I've got the tank back in but I still need to cinch down the straps and put in a fuel filter in. I'll need to swap the PROM since we're running smaller injectors. Put some gas in it, check the plugs and we're ready to fire. Hopefully she'll make some noise tomorrow. @brass my thread is pretty lame compared to the others but you're welcome to follow along. |

Cinched up the tank and went to put the cap on. Attached File Mother fucker. I tried adjusting the tank the best I could then transferred to the BFH and a block of wood. Attached File That's better. |

Thank you sir. I pulled the plugs and put a drop of EOS in each hole. The plugs looked like new so I put them back. I thought she'd be running on Sunday but the new pump wouldn't kick on. WTF?!?! So I head down the rabbit hole. I am pretty familiar with GM vehicles of this era but Rosey has some extras. There is a "hot wire" kit installed. Which is a secondary relay with direct battery power that bypasses the factory power supply. I chased all the wiring around and also came across a super secret kill switch hidden in an undisclosed location. After tracing the 87' of wiring I located this: Attached File Now the fuel pump is making pumping noises. So that's good. The bad news is that the battery is so dead I can't even jump it. It trys to turn over but there's just not enough juice. Date code on the battery is 2014. I'll have to pick one up next time I'm at Costco. |

I had a T Type but it was the 1985 Riviera T type. Awesome car but the front wheel drive and weight made it a little funky. Only issue ls were a cracked header in the early 1990s that had to be repaired there were no oem or aftermarket I could find and it ate turbos for some reason I can’t recall but had two in 100k miles I think. Love your project!! |

| Very cool! Growing up in Buicks, I've got a soft spot in my heart for the T-Types / GN / GNX!! Never owned one but got my butt kicked multiple times by them back when I had a 5.0 (it was apparently faster...but they were faster LOL!). They were such amazingly plush sleeper cars. |

I gave up my 1989 Isuzu Impulse Turbo because the o-ring on the back of the A/C compressor failed and was no longer available. I went through thousands of o-rings at work and could not find anything that would work. It was some weird figure 8 shaped thing with an aluminum plate in the middle of it. |

You wouldn't change the program, just get the data off each chip and put it back and no harm/changes done (especially since it looks to be old style PROM which needs UV-C light to erase through a window that is blocked out by the sticker label, newer ones are EPROM and EEPROM which can be erased and modified without erasing, no UV needed but they can be drop in replacements for those as they're standard layout "map" for the .hex data, back then not encrypted as new trucks are today to discourage the tuner crowds. There's a lot more user friendly tools and aftermarket ECUs now which you can tune with your Phone and any number of options, just make sure the engine is solid with good bearings/oil pressure and no other issues. There's enough of those old school swap out ECUs with programmed PROMS in the wild to make it worth it. Just something to rip then share on dropbox or something and post the link along with the brand and model number of your tuner(s) it's used in/for. Seems you've got three going on there, one must be for reading out current measurements while running to keep it in "safe zone", one for injectors/engine and the other as a boost controller (if they had electronic variable pop off valves back then? How many of these do you own, I see above you got that 442 as well. This collecting business can easily explain why this build thread is at a slightly slower pace than somebody going balls out on one for a couple months. ![]() |
