Resist Data Centers as much as you possibly can (Page 1 of 3)

They come in and eventually swallow up everything around them. The amount of money they are throwing around is staggering. The farmers who would "never sell" are all slowly giving in simply because they cannot operate next to them. Everyone with a house within 2 miles has slowly given in and sold. As soon as they sell, the bulldozers come in. Once quiet roads are packed now. The prices in town on everything are going up simply because the businesses know that they can charge more to the thousands of temporary workers. The data center project in my county is more valuable than ALL of the other property in the county ADDED TOGETHER. The county leaders of course gave them a tax abatement. It feels like a boom, but it's also created an uneasy feeling among almost everyone. It's bizarre that we are doing all of this for some computers in concrete buildings. |

Concrete will be the legacy when the windmills come down, obsolete data centers shut down to be replaced by new construction elsewhere, and the waste is buried and encapsulated. That, and rolling electrical supply blackouts as the data centers consume the available supply. Describing the size of data centers as the size of the power consumption instead of storage size or flops is interesting and amazingly and seemingly transparent. And I'll bet it's under predicted. An interesting map: US Data Centers Map Folks should have already been paying closer attention. Also beware of the NVIDIA bubble of processor sales. If the reported sales are true, the GPUs are piling in warehouses waiting and aging toward obsolescence for data center completions. I advocate for building data centers in the New Frontier of the crumbling inner cities. There's plenty of room without displacing the hood rats. |

I live in northern VA the data center capital of the US. Fuck data centers. They already cause electricity issues during the dead of summer as well as water. And my fucking electricity bill and water bill has never been higher despite using almost the exact same amount of electricity / water year over year. The only people I see cheering these obelisks of dystopia on are the motherfuckers who have their checks signed by the assholes building them. |
