| Looking for some recommendations on pipe tobacco. I've been dabbling in pipes and cigars recently and I'm still looking for a good pipe tobacco. I've found I enjoy cigars more but I don't always have an hour and a half to be out in the cold. Any pipe tobaccos that are similar to cigars? Looking for something unflavored. I've tried a bunch of pipe tobaccos and about the only one that's come close is Plum Pudding buts it's a huge pain to smoke and keep lit. Don't hate English blends but not a huge fan of Latakia. Definitely not looking for an aromatic. |

My son got this as a gift - he's gonna start dabbling... Apparently this is from the company that MacArthur initially approached to make a pipe to his preference.

I lean more towards the aromatics. My daily driver has been Great Dane from Missouri Meerschaum, and occasionally I'll run John Cotton's Double Pressed Creme. Unfortunately, both of these are blends from Sutliff and they are part of the STG buyout happening right now so those blends are going away along with a lot of other popular options. This has been a big upset to the pipe tobacco community for sure. Keep this in mind as you buy your blends, because if they're from Sutliff or Mac Baren, chances are you're buying remaining stock on something that is now discontinued. |

| C&D's "Billy Budd" is the closest I've had to a cigar like taste (it uses Maduro wrapper in the blend), though it also has a good deal of Latakia. If you're looking for cigar levels of "vitamin N", then the various Samuel Gawith English blends are hard to beat, especially their rope tobaccos. I have to be careful smoking those. It's very easy to go overboard with only a few bowls of Irish Brown or Black Bogie. |

I started off several years ago with cigars, and have a fairly narrow range of what I like in them, mostly Nicaraguan Maduro-wrapped types. Definitely nothing infused with any flavor, and thought I'd try to replicate that in the pipe tobaccos I would try. After starting off as a self acclaimed "purist", and only trying English blends, and various other non-aro's, I learned I wasn't finding much that I really liked. Long story short, I've been smoking pipes for 3-4 years, and I now smoke a pipe much more often than cigars, and am having a wonderful time trying all kinds of pipe tobacco, including lots of aromatics. Pipe tobacco is cheap enough that you can try a couple ounces of this and that, and find out what you like. Go to smokingpipes.com, and look around at the tobaccos, bulk is usually much cheaper, read reviews, and order up a variety. Oh, and collecting pipes is a bit of a rabbit hole of its own! |
I've almost completely stopped smoking cigars, apart from the occasional stick to get some ash to make pipe mud for my corn cob pipes.  For me, the tobacco pipe is a more relaxing and enjoyable experience. You can fine-tune pretty much everything about it...the pipe, the tobacco, the tools, the accessories, etc. I'm a tinkerer so packing the bowl, tamping it while smoking, and cleaning it when done gives me something to do. I believe that smelling like pipe tobacco may be a bit less 'offensive' to non-smokers than cigars, at least in my own experience. It takes less time to smoke and you can adjust this time by how much tobacco you put in the bowl which is a convenience that cigars don't really have. I also enjoy my nicotine and am a smoker/vaper, so with tobacco pipes I can and do inhale a bit of the smoke or push it through my nose, but cigars are a bit too harsh for that. My wife doesn't mind the smell of either, but prefers the aromatics over the cigars. For her, cigar smoke is only enjoyable to the extent that it reminds her of her dad who was a daily cigar smoker. Attached File From left to right; MM Legend (filtered), MM Iconic Legend (filtered), Whitluck's ebony (filtered), Viking Bifrost tapered poker, MM Elf Cobbit, MM maple hardwood poker, MM mini cob(?). Those last two I don't think are currently sold by MM, came in a Christmas gift bag from their recent holiday prize drawing that I won. My favorite is the elf cobbit, I like the long stem and it has me looking at other churchwarden pipes, it's also the only cob I own with a hardwood insert. The two legends are pipe mudded, first go at it and it came out nicely. The Whitluck's ebony, and the wax canvas pouch you see on the right, came in a 35 dollar kit from Amazon that I used to get started and it honestly wasn't a bad kit for the money, came with pipe, pouch, leather pipe holder, czech tool, pipe cleaners, carbon filters, and some bowl screens that went right in the trash. The Viking came in a customizable Christmas combo from pipesandcigars for around 80 dollars, and with it I got two tins of tobacco (john cottons creme, peterson early morning pipe), Rockwell pipe tool, a Viking leather tobacco pouch, and some Savinelli balsa filters (for my other pipes since the Viking isn't filtered). |

I've been primarily smoking MM Great Dane, but it was a Sutliffe blend that is being discontinued after the STG buyout and I'm down to maybe 6oz left. Have some Blood Red Moon on the way from smokingpipes to see if that can replace the Great Dane, along with a tin of St. Patricks Reserve 2025 that I got free with the Peterson Churchwarden Smooth D17 I ordered.  |

OP, go to your local tobacconist and stick your nose in the tobacco jars. I've never been to a place that wouldn't let one sample a bowl.
