If you read the descriptions online it should give you a good idea if they are aromatic or not based on any "toppings," "casings," or "flavorings." Anything labeled a VaPer, english, balkan, or latakia blend will be more likely to be non-aromatic. I find it easier to call pretty much anything that isn't aromatic an english. If you want to try a VaPer (virginia-perique blend) which are very popular right now, the big dog in the field is Escudo. After a while you will find what you don't like. I don't like burley, or VaPer blends, or almost all aromatics, but your taste will be different than mine. I will say that Peterson is a safe brand to avoid aromatics. Those are all rebrands of the old Dunhill blends since Peterson bought them out. The ones in that photo in particular are traditional english blends. |

I’m a flake man myself. Flakes seem to have a much richer flavor than shag or cube cut, but they take some time to prepare for me. Most are too wet in the tin for best results. Wet means it’ll smoke hotter and risk tongue burn. Rub out 2-3 slices onto a paper towel and set aside in an air conditioned (that is, dry) environment for a couple of hours. The right moisture level for me is dry to the touch but still with some flexibility. If it crunches, it’s too dry. Put this back in the tin (it’ll rehumiidify) get a fresh flake or two, and try again. If you don’t want to do this and you want to smoke it right now anyway, pack your bowl and exhale through the stem and down into the bowl from the top to inject a little moisture. Once you learn how dry you like it, you can certainly dry the whole tin at once by spreading onto a paper towel and letting it dry for a few hours. As far as tins, I tend to gravitate to va-pers and va-per-burley flakes. A little mild oriental is also a good spice in these. I don’t like Latakia or black (vanilla) cavendish because those are too overwhelming in a blend. Peterson’s University Flake and Irish Flake are a couple of my favorites. Escudo too. C&D Exhausted Rooster, Sunday Picnic, and Seersucker are also good va based flakes with enough spicy tobacco added to make them interesting. C&D Gray Ghost is a medium spicy oriental blend ribbon cut with no Latakia that also serves to mix in with milder va blends to spice them up. I also love Rattray’s Hal o the Wynd which is a mild but tasty va in a broken flake form. Easy to rub and pack. |

OP, Since a lot of non-aromatic "English" tobaccos are a blend of many different types, sometimes it's hard to isolate specific tobacco flavors to find what you like. One thing I've done is find tobaccos that are heavy in one specific ingredient, and try to isolate flavors that way. For instance, C&D Star of the East is 50% Latakia, whereas C&D Exclusive is 50% Perique. I found this more helpful than trying blends that were a little bit of everything. One really interesting tobacco I tried recently is C&D's Pirate Kake, which is 75% Latakia. I thought it would be overpowering, but it's actually quite good!  I still need to get a better feel of the difference between Burleys and Virginias, but that's an experiment for another day.

Boswell has a couple of non aromatic sampler packages. They have good stuff... Northwoods, Countryside, Mild English, Railroad Station, Magnum Blend Trick these days is to find something you like thats not going to Dissappear. I was a big fan of the old Frog Morton blends, but alas theys gone bye bye. Some of the old blends like 965, Early Morning Pipe, Prespyterian mixture, Nightcap and Squadron Leader are fairly safe choices. I started playing with the Stokkebye Lux Navy Flake. prepping flake can be intimidating for some beginners, but its really simple... just rub it out and go for it. I like it a lot I do still use a few aromatics... ( Cult Blood Red Moon and the old 1Q in particular) mainly in cool weather, but I really prefer non aromatics ( Boswell Countryside and Northwoods are my favorite) Lately ive been alternating with pipe in the morning and cigars in the afternoon. Im a BIG fan of the Pepin Garcia offerings in the My Father lines like the Le Bijou 1922 and the Judge.... they alternate nicely with an English Blend pipe blend |
