Investigating a career/life change, as such, I'm going through the hiring process now (already passed the written, PAT, panel interview & poly). What do I need to know/consider about the academy as a 53 yr old (in relatively decent shape, but I already know I'm not as young as I used to be.)? It's an 8-5, M-F, everything provided by the hiring agency arrangement. I'm "assuming" there will be physical conditioning (timed runs, pushups, situps, etc.), but can someone shed light on what, if any, requirements there are for TX LE to pass? I'd like to prepare now, before attending, so I know I can smoke whatever requirements there are. Things I should contemplate before attendance, that I haven't thought of yet? (Besides biting my tongue/keeping my mouth shut as much as possible?) Any tips/tricks/pointers? TIA |

There aren't any statewide physical fitness tests for LE; each jurisdiction/Academy has their own requirements. If you look up the Coopers test, you will get a general idea for PT tests, although most have moved away from his tests. Our Dept even made the PT requirements less strenuous but they use the push up/situp/1.5 mile run still. The driving and shooting are the same: jursidiction and Academy creates their own tests for qualification. Sorry this doesn't help but you really need to ask the dept that is sponsoring you for their requirements. |
| As for the Academy itself, just remember it's a game and you don't take anything personal. Do what they say to do, when they say to do it, don't talk back (like you said) and definitely don't compare anything you do to your previous life experience. At your (and my age) you will be the old man and have more perspective than the youngsters. |
