Felony stop. Known felon resisting arrest and you have your hands full. Out of nowhere someone sees what's going on and whacks the perp on the head a couple of times with a Maglite and says, "That ought to settle him down a bit. Have a good day." By the time you have him cuffed the guy is gone. You think you MIGHT recognize the citizen that helped you out but are unsure. How do you report that? |

| Honestly, if I had helped out a cop in a way that directly puts a criminal at a disadvantage (especially if I did anything to physically help), the best thing he can do for me in return is ensure that I can't be tied back to it. Criminals and their families ("mah baby didn't do nuthin!") seem to have a habit of going after cops in civil court any chance they can. What do you think they would do to a civilian who doesn't have a police dept, police union and legal protections to support them? A verbal 'thank you' if/when able and the police report stating 'he looka like a man' would be more than enough for me. |
