Am I the only one that wants this? Probably not. I've got a couple 8 port switches in use, a couple USB HDDs and such, and they all use 12V wall warts. I'd much rather have those things powered via USB C. I know Adafruit makes cables that go from USB C to the appropriate barrel connectors... but for 12V, you have to have a USB C PD power supply that specifically outputs 12V... and few actually do. I've found a couple, but it would be so much better if the cable itself could step down from 15V. I recently switched from a cable modem to fiber through a different ISP, and the router/modem device they put in is pretty small and is powered off of USB C. I love it. I asked Claude to find some 8 port switches that run off of USB C, and found a brand called Cudy on Amazon. They have an 8 port and a 5 port switch that run off of USB C. They're plastic cased, so they're pretty lightweight. I haven't purchased yet, but they aren't very expensive. I want to rearrange the network stuff I have in my office with an 8 port to handle the connection from the wall, then attach the 5 port unit to the bottom of my desk to serve the computers I have on my desk and the AP next to my desk. Where the fiber comes in, I'll replace the 8 port router I have there. I'd like to replace the big power strip thing I have with just one USB C power source with a few outlets. I have a USB HDD connected to my router there, so I may need to try that cable from Adafruit... but I need to be sure the USB C power source supports 12V. I'm of the opinion now that EVERY device that draws <100W should be powered by USB C PD. At most, include an adequate cable. I have grown to loathe wall warts. |
