| @JKrammes Grit I go to varies. Clean 600 always seems to look good. If I'm going to leave the finish a little "dirty" meaning not sand the 15N20 layer after etching, that's where I'll stop. If I plan on sanding after the etch for a bright 15N20 layer, I'll go up to 1200 and use 1000 grit after the etch. |

Most of it is pretty durable. You can ruin the finish, but it's easily restored as well. This one is getting about 14 coats of Danish oil. If it gets dull or scuffed, just rubbing a new coat on will bring it back quite a bit. Originally Posted By Kuraki:

I got into watching that show on a recent trip up to PA. It was a family trip and my daughters (8,8,& 5), all got hooked too.

They were trying to fill a few open slots, but for whatever reason, I didn't fit in with what they were trying to fill, so they asked if I was still interested, they would get in touch with me about being on Season 5. That's when they called me again, basically I was between both shops, and couldn't really even make a knife as things were. And they wanted me to come out in 4-5 weeks. Basically in 4 weekends working non-stop I moved the rest of my equipment, pulled wire to everything, built a hydraulic forging press, built a Fogg drum heat treating forge and hung new LED lighting in the new shop (almost broke my foot dropping a huge steel shelf on it). The week before I left to film, I found time to test my forging press twice, first forging down some round stock and second forging a low layer billet of damascus. And then I was on the plane. I cut some corners to be ready in the event I was in the final challenge, didn't get winterized properly because I have limited funds, so I applied them to equipment and tools rather than insulation and heat. Kinda suffering for that this winter but it's still better to work in this shop in the winter than my old one. I'm ready for spring  Sucks when your water dip buckets freeze, ferric chloride freezes, etching solution freezes, windex frozen, even my quench oil froze into slush at one point. I can deal with 15-20f but when it's -20f I just couldn't get a lot done.
This summer I'll finish out the exterior walls with steel and insulation and put heat in, I just have to decide how I'm going to heat it. I'm limited by my ceiling height, otherwise a vented propane IR tube heater would be the hands down choice. I'd prefer to avoid forced air of any kind (dust) and it has to be vented because I can't have condensation building up, I get enough from running the forge as it is. I basically haven't bought anything firearm related in the last year. All my discretionary income/cash has been applied to knifemaking. I still need/want to build a power hammer, roll mill, a couple electric kilns and a couple new grinders. That will likely take another year. |
That's pretty intense. Its always the in opportune times that opportunity strikes.  Are the time restraints as tough as they make them appear on the show? I'm interested to know about your experiences in performing on the show. The behind the scenes kinda stuff. |

Yes, they are 100% serious about the show being a contest. They take your phone for the day while you're on set so you can't google or phone-a-friend. Whenever you're on down time (between shooting) you're attended by a staffer to make sure anything verboten isn't being discussed (like collusion or things we'd been specifically asked not to discuss among ourselves so all of our individual interviews are truly individual interviews). But we knew all of that going in, there was nothing unexpected, and I didn't find any of it to be unreasonably onerous. It's a lot of spinning plates to keep a production like that going on schedule when everyone is doing what they're supposed to, much less when people start just doing their own thing. (Maybe being a plant manager gives me some perspective on that ) Lots of hurry up and wait. Lots of multiple takes - outside timed stages. Once Will says "your time starts - now" and the clock starts ticking, it's go time and there's no pause or time out or let's roll from the top. It's just GO and try not to trip over any of the crew or their cords. Side note - when you see a guy on the show just yell "WELDING" and walk over to the welder, or "HOT COMING THROUGH" etc, it's because we were asked to do that for the crews benefit, since they're all kinda focused on different things and not all perceiving what every contestant is doing at that moment. Some episodes that doesn't make the production, others it does, but we all did it.
And everyone involved was pretty awesome to work with. The crew, the casting people, the judges - all fantastic. Understanding, helpful, interesting people. About the only thing I was worried about going in was whether this group of New Yorkers would treat us country bumpkins in a way that might liberate my normally well controlled mouth  But it wasn't like that at all. There was one guy on the production team that rubbed me wrong, but I don't think it was out of animosity as much as some innocent confusion, but really everyone there made us feel welcome and appreciated and made sure we were taken care of. No one is being fed any "lines." The contestants are speaking for themselves. They may be answering questions that in the show are implied but not actually being shown asked, but having been on both sides (viewer and contestant) I'm pretty confident that the people you see on the show are being their true characters and not being edited or prompted to come off a certain way.
I think that is about as much as I can say without getting into an areas I signed an NDA not to discuss. Basically, it was kind of an adventure, I had a great time, I met some really fantastic people, a well run production and it felt like a themed vacation almost, even though they were long days. I'm very grateful I had the opportunity. |

Working on a collaboration knife with a buddy in Texas to kinda show him how I put hidden tang knives together. He forged this blade out and sent it to me, I turned it into nickel san mai and now ill fit a guard, handle block and set it up for tang nut assembly and send it back for him to finish. Attached File Then I fit the guard to the multi bar bowie. This slot was milled about .005 undersize and then went through some filing and swaging to end up with a fit I'm proud of. Attached File Sneak peak at a future Damascus project too, this is crushed Ws then twisted and will be married together and then feather cut and rewelded before I forge it into a blade.
