Made me happy the clinic was up on 10' stilts to say the least, since it's maybe a hundred yards from the river.

I wasn't expecting to find anyone at the Coliseum on a Monday, so I didn't have my camera gear with me. On top of that, I thought I'd need the empty backpack, in which to stuff my dog to get him down the rickety ladders to the base of the cliff line. Turns out, some things have changed since the Pleistocene, when I was last here. This gal is on a 5.14b. This is nearly a full grade harder than anything established in the Coliseum when I was last here, and she floated through most of this route an order of magnitude more effortlessly than anyone I'd seen to date on any route in this cave. It's really hard to convey the scale of difficulty of what she's attempting here. Pixel 7 / 0.7x lens / raw

She didn't send the route cleanly, not yet, but I think she will by autumn. I've been up on this cliff before, on a much, much easier route that shares the start of this one. I had no business even being on it, honestly. It was that hard. The easiest route. Only guilted into it by a couple who'd watched me solo something a bit earlier. |

Testing out a Mission 1 Pro on a road trip this weekend. For a 1” sensor GoPro in 50mp mode, it does pretty solid. Random pullover spot in Denali National Park. Mostly just seeing if it’ll work better than an iPhone for work travel.

First this is not my photo. A member on another forum took it with his phone. It's Big Boy 4014 going over the Nicholson bridge in PA. It was on my bucket list this year but my wife is ill and I couldn't go. It's also within reasonable driving distance from my house. A one day trip. @Fredman can you imagine what we could have done with our equipment?

There’s a concrete trestle across the James just below the Powhite Parkway that we used to sneak out on and drink beer when we were teenagers. Two tracks. About every two hundred feet there’s this little “alcove” you can stand in to get off the tracks. But, at night, drunk, it’s impossible to figure out which track the train is on, so you find yourself in the position of having to run AT the train to get to the closest safe spot. That, or just lay down between the tracks and hope nothing is hanging off the side. Then, if you wanted, you could crawl out on the steel beams UNDER the downtown expressway where it crosses over Powhite, and swing you legs in the air while cars go by. Good times, good times. |

Fair point. It does seem like the mission 1 is having issues line wide with infinity focus though, with peak sharpness being at 6’ or so. That doesn’t quite fill my niche. Edit: it's going back to GoPro and I'll just use my iphone for now until I upgrade to a Z mount. |

But, I've got some reservations about it, even prior to NorthPolar's concerns. What I never see out there is some sort of genuinely objective, critical comparisons of X vs Y vs Z platforms. It'd be nice to see a GoPro comparison that spans 3 or 4 generations; same for cell phones; and current cell phones vs current GoPro. I've been meaning to post a thread to that end, but my comparisons are a number models behind at this point. But, but still think it would have value. I have some GoPro 11 vs Pixel 7 stuff for comparable scenes. And GP 11 / Pixel 7 / D850 stuff in static scenes. Raw/JPG, too. I like my GoPros because of their durability/sacraficability, but my Pixel 7 just out performs it with regards to still images. And it's not even close. But, sensor quality, signal processing, aside ... In the end, there's just no substitute for bigger glass. |

@Fredman I use the Timberlog app. It uses the "doyle" method. With the app I can get an estimate of the BF to be cut when a customer drops logs off. And give them a fairly close estimate of what it's going to cost. I don't do a lot of customer work because it's to much of a pain in the azz. I also like to know what I have of my own on hand of my own logs. EBR |

So I got a call Friday from a long time client; she had been notified by the state Forestry dept that they had found a bark beetle infestation on her property. So today I went out to assess the situation. This property is literally as far off the pavement as you can get in Louisa County. It’s accessed by an old CCC road. 3.75 miles back in there. Tens of thousands of acres are accessed off this road, but because the road is more or less public (but not controlled by VDOT or the county), nobody is going to pay money to maintain it, because Billy Bob goes mud bogging every weekend ripping the shit out of it. Here’s pretty much what it looks like.  Found the bug spot and thankfully it appears to have collapsed on its own. As it happens, I’m temporarily driving the intern truck while mine is in the shop. Intern trucks are exactly what you would expect. Mechanically sound, but beat to shit and back. We had had the intern painting boundary lines. The intern left the extra paint in the truck bed. I might have missed one particularly impressive hole, and bounced my head off the roof of the truck. Got out just to do a cursory equipment check, and, well, let’s just say paint cans, poorly sealed by summer interns, don’t respond well to getting bounced around.  Fuuuuuu….. The schadenfrude of actually having a spill kit in the bed, and not being able to use it, doesn’t escape me (these kits are actually purchased by another client, and only to be used on that client’s jobs). So I stopped at AutoZone on the way home to get some shop towels to try to mop it up, and I’m slaving away in the sun in their lot getting pink. Nice cashier lady is watching all this, of course, and brings me out a free box of exam gloves. Sweet! Then, a little while later, the other cashier comes out and gives me 2 free rolls of paper towels. Awesome! So, if you ever find yourself in Louisa Virginia, in need of any kind of car part or service item, swing by and give them some business. They rock! They didn’t even bitch about all the pink paint I spilled in their lot! |
