My big boy passed two weeks ago today. It's taken me this long to be able to do this. He was in his prime and then suddenly he wasn't. He showed no signs of anything wrong on Friday. On Monday we found out he had acquired an auto-immune response where his body was attacking and destroying his red blood cells., On Tuesday afternoon he passed. The best we can figure was he was so big and strong that he may have masked any signs. He was 5 this past August. Way too soon and he's missed. If there's a heaven for dogs he's resting in God's seat, he was a prankster. Miss you Ton. Attached File |
 We've lost another one: Derry finally caught up to her best bud Trip this morning, joining him in the halls of Dog'halla.  Derry (trailing Trip in this pic) had one good front leg, and that one recently started to show signs of Osteosarcoma, too painful to put any weight on, and then a large firm mass appeared on the shoulder joint. We lost Trip to Lymphoma a couple of years ago |

Lost this little guy a couple of weeks ago. He was 16 1/2. His heart basically just gave out on him. He was a great little dog, loyal and always there, just happy to be a part of things. Miss you Dingo. Attached File |

Well, it was my pups turn… First of all, thank you to everyone else for sharing your experiences with the end of your pet’s life. As hard as it is, it helped me over the last couple years as I knew it would soon be time form mine to pass. Most notably on determine “when” in regard to euthanasia. In August 2024 our then 14yr old Mini Aussi had her first stroke. Vertigo, difficulty walking, etc. After talking with the vet and getting some meds to handle the vertigo, we decided to give her a week before we made any call so that we didn’t take away her chance of recovery. A week later she had gotten back to about 80% and had a good quality of life still, but my wife and I had “the talk” and decided to look up an at home euthanasia place. Our pup was terrified of the vets office, and the last thing I wanted if I had to put her down is to die terrified. On 24 December 2024, at 15yrs old, she had her second stroke with all the same symptoms. My wife and I were much less panicked this time as we knew what we were seeing this time. We got her to the vet and got the same meds, and made the same call to give her a week. After a week she seems to have mostly recovered, but by very early January 2025 it seemed like she was regressing to about 50-60% (compared to pre-first stroke). She had a hard time walking, a really hard time getting up stairs, had persistent mild (from what we could tell) vertigo, etc. She still seemed happy and was all there mentally, but we could tell she was struggling physically along with normal old dog issues. My wife and I made the call that “it was time” and we scheduled an appointment. To not do so for our own comfort would be unfair. On 10 January at almost exactly 1pm she was gone. The vet that came out was professional, respectful and quick. Due to local regulations they took her themselves to a local pet crematorium and we are awaiting the call to pick up her urn so she can lay to rest next to her adopted sister (my current avatar). My hope is that my experience will help someone else when it comes time to have that talk with their family and make the right call at the right time. I don’t feel that we made the call too soon or too late thankfully. My advice to anyone who has a pet that is getting up there in age is to watch them for a bit and get a good baseline as their “100%”, and then if or when they have overall health issues that bring them down to ~50% or something acute such as significant pain, dementia, etc. then it’s likely “that time”. I’ll go ahead and wrap this up before I can’t hold it together anymore. Thanks for reading.

Saschoo aka Sashquatch the Giant Malamute passed peacefully at the vet yesterday. He was in so much pain from what we thought was an ACL issue but turned out to be a fractured hip from bone cancer. @Joe_Pennsy In better times...  May it always be snowing where you're at buddy...

I lost my little sweetie back in September. Two years in and out of the rescue shelter because no one wanted her. Once I got her, she knew she hit the lotto. I was lucky enough to have her for 14 years. Attached File  |

Lost our Millie yesterday after 15.5 years. My wife and I found her by chance abandoned on a dark dirt road when she was maybe 6 weeks old. She lived a wonderful life with us on our farm, and created tremendous joy for our family and her yard mates. May you rest easy Millie, and thank you for blessing us with your presence. He always loved going to the vet. He was the center of attention and all his vets loved him. Well, they said his heart was getting worse but should still have a couple years. He got an injection for a new med, and a few hours later he was gone. He'll be greatly missed.  A week later we were able to pick up his remains. Another sad day.  We only have our oldest left. She's 15 and blind and deaf. Won't allow anyone to pet or touch her. We'll see how long she lasts. |
