| Remember when kids actually failed grades and were held back? This was actually a thing at one time. Hard to believe now I know. Anyone even hear of it happening lately? I doubt it. Dont even get me started on the illegals filling up our school system and slowing regular classes down. If you cant even speak english how do you pass a grade? That's another argument though. Just in general, kids can literally fuck off the whole year and not even attend class on a regular basis and get passed onto the next grade. Does this frustrate teachers ? I'm talking on the high school level for this conversation. |
| As far as illegals in schools, let me pass this tidbit I heard on the radio while passing through Las Vegas. It seems that they are having to cut the education budget because they are down somewhere around 10,000 students. Illegals from Biden administration going back???? |
| At our school, they get passed on to the next grade, but they don't get the credits. No credits, you can walk across the stage and get a certificate of attendance or something. No diploma. I don't know what it is called. It was explained to me that it works for you getting in to the military, and that's why they have it. |

In most HS you need 20 credits to graduate this how it worked for me 50 years ago Math 1 credit a year English 1 '' '' '' Science 1 '' '' '' Social Studies 1'' '' '' Physical ed 1/2 credit for the year electives 1/2 credit for two semesters wood shop, metal , drivers ed, health, home econ and what I can't remember |

Nope, can't do any of that because of hurt kiddo feels, helicopter parent litigation against the district, and last but certainly not least, district performance stats that affect pay and budget (hence no kid left behind"). |

My folks had had enough of my bullshit and military boarding school would take absolutely none of it. I got the lesson I needed in no one cares, it is all your fault, work harder. There were quite a few kids I went to elementary school with that failed various grades. There was one kid that failed kindergarten twice and then no one saw him again. A couple that had to repeat grades in middle school. I dont recall any that failed grades in high school, maybe one. My youngest was deemed gifted last year, but judging by the interaction I've had with his classmates and their parents short of one set, im pretty sure he is normal and they are just dumb. Then again, he could read and write before kindergarten and he taught himself cursive in 1st grade because he wanted to. He stands out. My oldest is in high-school taking mostly honors classes. She's pretty smart too. All her friends are the same way but from what she says, there are some people in honors classes that should definitely not be in them. I know they didn't get it from me. I scraped by. |

In grade school it’s somewhat rare here, usually it’s a conversation with parents and ideally they both agree it’s what’s best. It’s not punitive, they’re like 7 after all, but if they need to be held back they need to be held back. In high school though, you don’t repeat the whole year, it’s just that class you passed/didn’t pass. I explain to students that’s a much easier trigger to press. You’ll absolutely fail if you bust absences or get a <60. Do it all the time. What we do isn’t what most do, and OP is right that as a generality they kinda just pass you, literate or not. |

We had an unbelievable situation at our private school. Too long to explain, but bottom line, you have to be an advocate for your kids, and it doesn’t hurt to have them independently evaluated to make sure they are progressing as the school tells you they are. ETA if you want to listen to a really fascinating podcast, check out Sold a Story. It’s about how a certain reading curriculum (three cueing/Fontas & Pinnell) proliferated in the United States to the detriment of generations of children. Or Google “the science of reading” and read about it. |

My grandson goofed around too much in his junior year and had to either retake it this year or go to school in the summer last year to pass his junior year. He concentrated this time and passed junior grade in the summer last year and graduated this year |

Nikole Hannah-Jones a big BLM race hustler sent her kid to public school and years later found out the teachers weren't even grading or checking work, just handing out A grades to the right demos. EDIT: $52.3K spent per pupil at that school lol |
| We have a bunch of inherited school bonds (California) and most have lost intrinsic value of about 13%. Compton School District and Lucerne School District each down 30%. They still pay their interest and when they mature will (hopefully) redeem at full value and not default somewhere along the way. But they are pricing in risk. |

Under NCLB schools could be shut down if kids were held back. Schools double be punished for students not returning for the next. You could have really good scores, but of one socioeconomic group didn’t have enough students pass the standardized tests, the school would fail. Passing of failing as a school could come down to one black kid who shows up stoned and does poorly. |

Yeah holding kids back sounds great until your 12 Y/O daughter is sharing classes with a 15 Y/O with issues. Sometimes they'll have kids repeat kindergarten around here if they're not getting it but just the once. When it comes to getting a diploma, they have various seals to designate how much you actually accomplished. The diploma itself may not mean much but if it has all the seals you know that kid is smart and worked hard. At least in my state, there's way more opportunity for kids to get a truly great education than there was for my generation; the problem seems to be getting kids and even parents to want it. The state STEM academy is full of kids of H1B backgrounds; about 10% of the graduating class were named Patel. |

I was very much against home schooling until I saw the difference between what the public school system is pumping out vs private or home schooling these days. |

The contrary: you could be in Football TX where kids are routinely held back in grade school, not because of grades, but because they will benefit in HS years with a better opportunity at football as an older participant in their HS years. It's a thing. (Disclaimer: my youngest was the youngest in her graduating class and still managed to be a state HS champion.) |

I have been functionally “free” like a retired guy most of my life. I have tried to do lots of things. Experiencing life and accomplishing things. (I actually went to Harvard after I was already a cop) In spite of a few face plants, so far, so good. I have a lot of “what fantastic thing can I try to do next?” In my life. Somethings are one time things or for a season of my life only once. Somethings I keep doing. |
