I've been considering how to acquire some extra muscle. I appreciate your thought, but somehow I doubt your guy would want to drive 90 minutes each way for this. I could be wrong, but I'm also trying to be realistic. Speaking of realism, I need to reach out and see if it's still available and when the move-out cutoff is. |

I moved my machine shop from St. Louis to Chicago on my own. I had a lathe, Bridgeport type mill, smaller mill, box brake, welders, horizontal and vertical metal cutting bandsaws, woodworking tools and other stuff. I also had a 10' wide gantry with a chain hoist and span-sets, a pair of come-alongs, a bunch of sturdy pallets and a pallet jack, and rented a truck with a liftgate and tiedown locations. I got the pallet jack and a bunch of the heaviest duty ratchet straps from Harbor Freight. The gantry belonged to the owner of the building. With the gantry and span-sets I lifted each machine onto pallets and used ratchet straps to anchor the equipment to the pallets. Then with the jack, moved the pallets into the truck. The St. Louis location had a loading dock, so that wasn't bad moving that stuff into the truck there. I used more straps to anchor down the pallets. Once in Chicago, I rolled each pallet onto the lift, chocked the steering wheel of the jack, and brought the lift to the ground. I used the come-along to help spot the jack coming off the lift so the weight of the machinery would be more manageable. Then rolled each pallet into my new shop space, I used the come-along to help get the pallets up the incline to the door of the shop. Once inside, I rolled the palletized machines into place and using 4"x4" cribbing and a port-a-power hydraulic set as well as a farm jack and automotive floor jack, lifted each end of each machine 3-1/2" at a time until I had enough cribbing to slide the pallet out, I had to cut the lathe's pallet with a sawz-all to clear the cribbing. Then reverse the process until each machine was on the floor. It was a four day, five day if you count the drive, project. Good luck to you. |

I was already looking at renting a trailer - either HD or Sunbelt. A rental pallet jack and/or engine hoist from Harbor Freight are also on my imaginary list, as well as more ratchet straps and a decent comealong. Hmmm... looks like the mill is an older version of a G0757 - about 2000 lbs The lathe looks to be somewhere in the 12-14" range, which points to 1400-1500 lbs Pro help is looking rather attractive. Now to see if the seller responds to me or if someone else has swooped in. |

Do it! Buddy of mine moved his entire shop by himself. Hardinge lathe, PB mill, brakes, horizontal mills, a 6,000lb CNC, and more. Moved every one of them from the shop to the trailer with hand tools. We loaded his Hardinge HLV-H and Hardinge mill on the trailer with hand tools and 3 guys pretty easy. My HLV was loaded by 2 guys and a cherry picker. Off loaded the same way. |

Hot Damn... I may still be in the running!! He says he's had lots of interest, and hinted that there might be a bidding war... :-/ I got nothing via text, but I just got an email response. I can rent a trailer and a pallet jack or rollers, etc from Sunbelt. .......... ...All equipment is like new and is in perfect running condition. I will be able to show the equipment on February 15. @1:00. I will be out of town until then. There are no stairs. The machines are on a level basement floor that is at the same level as a concrete driveway to the street. Moving equipment in this area is easy. I unloaded the equipment when I bought it by myself off the back of a pickup truck using an "A" frame and 2 -#1000 pound chain hoists. Once on the ground, I moved the machines by rolling on pipe. The difficult part of the move is making a turn through a door into the equipment room, which is a mechanical room for the furnace and water heater. Machines are mounted on steel blocks for leveling and adequate space is available for floor jacks or pallet jacks. The mill needs the motor temporarily removed to clear under a door lintel. Keep in mind Lathes and Metal shears are notoriously top heavy. An engine hoist and chains can help you pull it around on heavy duty 4 wheel dollies Mills are not too bad and can be pried off the floor and put on 3/4" black pipe to be rolled around. BUT HEAVY! Getting it up a trailer is about getting it over the lip of the tailgate and then rolled up it the same way with a chain hoist attached to the front of the trailer. |
