As Flock camera backlash grows, vandalism incidents mount in Metro Detroit Law enforcement officials are investigating at least eight incidents of vandalism of Flock cameras in Oakland County amid growing backlash over the technology. The Oakland County Sheriff's Office has reported instances of vandalism involving Flock cameras in Orion Township, Commerce Township, Independence Township and Pontiac. OCSO also reported one of their cameras was stolen in Rochester Hills, according to spokesperson Tyler Sweers. Flock Technology is one of the most well-known providers of license plate readers. Two cameras were also vandalized in Novi, confirmed Police Chief Erick Zinser, though he declined to give details on what happened or how the cameras were vandalized. |

King William County cancels contract for Flock cameras after vandalism, theft KING WILLIAM — The King William County’s Sheriff’s Office has removed its Flock surveillance cameras after two incidents of vandalism and a theft. Sheriff Thomas “Don” Lumpkin said the eight cameras in the county were removed on financial grounds. The cameras had been placed in locations at entrance and exit points of the county and where thefts and other illegal activity could potentially be stopped, Lumpkin said. Lumpkin said the sheriff’s office is investigating two cases of vandalism and the theft of one camera in the county. “All are still under investigation, so I won’t be commenting on that at this time,” he said via an email last week. |

De Soto police investigate damage to Flock camera Police in De Soto, Missouri, are investigating after they say someone intentionally damaged a Flock Safety camera near the De Soto Athletic Complex. Authorities say vandals damaged the camera pole and struck the solar panel several times with unidentified “projectiles.” The equipment has since been repaired, and police said the camera is back up and fully operational. |

Riverside County man arrested for allegedly vandalizing Flock camera, assaulting contractor A Riverside County man was arrested on Monday for allegedly vandalizing a Flock camera and assaulting a contractor who was installing a new license plate reader, according to authorities. In a news release shared by the Riverside County Sheriff's Office, deputies said they were called to the 73000 block of Fred Waring Drive in Palm Desert for reports of an assault with a deadly weapon. "Upon arrival, deputies learned that the victim was a contractor hired by Flock Safety to replace a license plate reader camera for the city of Palm Desert that had previously been vandalized," the release said. Just going off memory here, the metal cutting blades are generally listed as ferrous metals on them. The teeth are smaller and more numerous and will clog. Most of the aluminum I've cut lately I want to say I just used some crosscut blades; I'll try to remember to check in the morning. Much faster on aluminum than other methods. More teeth, cleaner cut and more chances of chips sticking. Fewer but larger teeth, faster and less sticking. WD-40 or other spray lube is your friend, it might help with the noise a little but cutting any metal is loud. Shame those little, single use flare sized cuttering torches are so expensive. Totally unrelated subject, just as I expect they're going to start having cameras watching the cameras or 360 lenses, I'm not going to be surprised when they switch to metal poles. They already used galvanized steel poles in some areas. I have some plans and specs that break down the different standard pole types. What's crazy is that the CEO has already hired multiple PR firms, and he's still releasing statements like this. It'd be fascinating to be a fly on the wall in their strategy meetings - is he going off script, or is this part of the plan? It's possible that the messaging is designed for their government customers, not us - it certainly lines up with the positions I hear from them. |

Investigators say the teenagers cut down the camera pole along Harmony Church Road, then beat the camera with a hammer until its battery pack exploded and burst into flames. While the teenagers have posted bail, the remnants of the attack remain. |

Man sued local governments in WA over Flock records. He’s won $300K Washington cities and counties have paid more than $300,000 since 2025 in public records settlements for failing to release images from Flock Safety cameras. They were filed by one man who recently told Cascadia Daily News he wanted people in the communities to better understand the AI-powered, roadside surveillance technology some law enforcement agencies use to document every passing vehicle. Between September 2024 and October 2025, Jose Rodriguez filed 53 records requests to local governments in Washington. Roughly one-third of them did not comply. The records, at the time, presented hurdles for record custodians because they were hosted by Flock rather than internally, and subject to a rolling 30-day deletion policy and download limits. In other words, the records could be gone before a custodian accessed them to fulfill a request. SNIP In total, 15 local governments have settled cases with Rodriguez for anywhere between $5,000 and $40,000. At least 13 of the 53 jurisdictions that received a records request from Rodriguez have since canceled their Flock contracts or deactivated the cameras, according to a CDN review of public records and local reporting. An additional five local governments paused the use of Flock cameras before reactivating them. |

Brevard deputy resigns after Flock searches, 111 mph stop and ex-girlfriend probe BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. - Michael Fultz resigned after the agency opened an administrative investigation into several serious violations, including logging into Flock cameras to look up his ex-girlfriend's license plate. The Brevard County Sheriff's Office was sent a number of photos from Fultz's ex-girlfriend. One photo shows Fultz allegedly demonstrating a Nazi salute while he allegedly shaved his mustache to resemble Adolf Hitler, according to the Sheriff's Office report. Fultz allegedly admitted to this and said it was a poor attempt at humor. Videos provided to the sheriff's office also showed Fultz arguing with his ex-girlfriend about moving out of the apartment. According to the report, this occurred in front of the woman's child. Fultz was wearing his deputy uniform, used vulgar language and escalated the confrontation. Additionally, Fultz allegedly used his agency-issued firearm during a consensual sexual encounter, according to the report. |

Shively police officer accused of using flock cameras to track woman across Kentucky, Indiana A Shively police officer is facing multiple charges after authorities said he misused flock camera database systems to track a woman’s movements over a five-month period. Asad Zahir, 40, faces five counts of first-degree official misconduct and five counts of fourth-degree unlawful access to a computer. According to an arrest citation filed by the Shively Police Department, investigators allege Zahir abused his access to the Flock safety system — a network of license plate-reading cameras — between Jan. 1 and May 2. Zahir is accused of conducting more than 2,048 searches within the database, specifically targeting two Kentucky vehicle registrations belonging to the mother of his child. Police said Zahir used the system continuously to monitor the woman’s movements across both Kentucky and Indiana. During this timeframe, Zahir also allegedly harassed the woman and made threatening comments, prompting her to obtain a temporary protective order against him in Indiana. Court records indicate Zahir was released on personal recognizance shortly after his arrest. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Jefferson District Court on Aug. 28. |

When Bozzo noticed that his ex’s car was often near that of another police officer, he began searching for that officer’s vehicle as well. He did so 29 times between March and May. On Wednesday, the GBI arrested 29-year-old Michael Canty on charges of misuse of a license plate reader system and violation of oath of office, the agency announced Thursday. On Aug. 6, the Covington Police Department asked the GBI to investigate allegations that the department’s Flock Safety system had been misused. The GBI said its preliminary investigation indicates that Canty accessed the Flock system for non-law enforcement purposes. The agency has not released more information on the case. |

Porter County Sheriff Jeff Balon announced the disciplinary action Thursday, saying he decided to publicly address the internal affairs investigation because of the national attention surrounding law enforcement’s use of license plate reader technology. According to Balon, the investigation began after a citizen discovered their license plate had been searched through the Porter County Sheriff’s Office’s Flock LPR system for a reason that was not consistent with department policy. Balon said he immediately ordered an internal affairs investigation. “The outcome of the investigation confirmed that an Officer did enter the citizen’s license plate into the Flock LPR system,” Balon said. “The reason for the entry violated our policy.” The sheriff’s office did not identify the officer or disclose the specific reason the license plate was searched. As a result of the investigation, the officer received a demotion in rank, an unpaid suspension, an indefinite suspension from using the Flock system and mandatory remedial ethics training. |

From tracking ex-romantic partners to searching a former employer, at least two agencies have now forwarded cases of their officers misusing Flock Safety license plate reading technology to county prosecutors for review of possible criminal charges. SNIP In Prairie Grove, Police Chief Michael Goins said he discovered one of his officers had conducted hundreds of Flock camera searches, but not for any official purpose. Goins said Officer William Copp was searching "ex-spouses, ex-girlfriends, ex-boyfriends of current girlfriends, people that had some sort of domestic relationship with him... One individual was searched approximately 140 times." SNIP In Berkeley, Officer Terrance Mastrino was investigated this past July for performing a Flock search back in 2025 of an individual who was his former employer, according to the Berkeley Chief of Police and records reviewed by the I-Team. SNIP In Palos Park, Officer Cohen Piechocinski was accused of conducting eleven unauthorized Flock searches of his personal vehicles, and his Flock privileges were revoked on August 3.
