With all of the videos of protesters getting carted off and resisting arrest, what is it like when you arrest a REAL professional criminal? Not some street level pimp or two bit armed robber but someone like a higher up mob guy. My guess is the arrest is very uneventful. The professional will simply turn around, put his hands behind his back and accept his fate and keep his mouth shut. |

Is he going in for a misdemeanor or a parole violation? "Turn around sir, you have to go in." "Ohhh kaaay." Is he wanted for a murder, or other felonies with multiple warrants and other agencies are involved? They know they are going away for a long time so it'll depend if they want to go back, put up one last fight for fun, or go out in a blaze of glory. It all depends on what mood they are in. |

Mafia guys? Gentlemen. Never had a problem with them. Street level thugs? If they have an audience, they will put on a show for their boys. Without an audience? More than a few will start crying and ask to call mom. Real deal OG gangster type killers? Yea, they will fight to get away. They will try and kill you if they get the chance… These are the guys who have done hard time and never want to go back. They would rather take a chance at a kill or be killed shootout with LE. |

We had a warrant for a made guy from the bonanno crime family. Go to his house at O'dark thirty one morning, stack up and do the bang and announce... While we are waiting the "appropriate amount of time for a person within to answer the door" We hear someone come running down the stairs inside and this guy opens the door. Big and bulky, typical Tony Soprano looking guy, walks out with his hands up and asks us if we could please be quiet because his wife and kids were all asleep in the house...  So, we were quiet... He told us his shoes were right inside, and someone reached inside the door to grab some shoes for him as he was barefoot in a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt... Then we closed the door and walked him out to the car. I think it took 3 sets of cuffs stringed together to connect his arms behind his back. Guy thanked us repeatedly for being gentlemen... Never asked us why we were there, never asked what the warrant was for. Nope, just cuffed up and got in the car. Only thing he asked us was when he could get something to eat because he "skipped breakfast". Back in the cellblock, the guy rolled his own prints for us. It wasn't his first rodeo... We got him a buttered roll and some coffee for breakfast. It was one of the easiest arrests I was ever involved in. The guy took a plea about a year later and got time served. |

I also dealt with REAL mob guys and as stated above, it’s all about respect with them… It’s kind of funny, but it is what it is. As for street level thugs… Most are not that bright, but very dangerous with ZERO impulse control or the ability to think past “the now.” Side note: Russian/Eastern European mobsters are a totally different animals than the Italian and their associated mobsters… Watch them like a hawk and once they’re in a secured/controlled area, take pictures… Not with your personal cellphone, but a work camera or work phone, of ALL their tattoos since that will help you to figure out their “story.” Harden criminals, they’re a mixed bag of characters, but the real OG convicts are often easier to deal with on first contact since they know the drill… While they’re trying to figure out if there is a “right” time or a real chance for a successful attack/escape. Often, their only immediate question is if it’s a state or federal warrant. The thing about OG convicts is that they’re always watching and quietly sizing you up from the first contact, during the ride to the office or jail. The funny thing about this is that we are sizing each other up at the same time AND we know it!! Also, you know… if you don’t know, if you’re dealing with an OG is when you’re handcuffing them. They will automatically assume the correct cuffing position with a slight bend towards the front and a slight dip of their head. No matter who or what you’re dealing with, you always keep your guard up AND constantly watch their hands and their stance/positioning since that’s, IMHO, a massive sign of possible trouble… During the sizing up game. If they take up a “T” stance towards you, you offline AND if they reposition themselves again, tell them, calmly AND quietly not to “square off” on you. Hopefully, the cover agent/officer will pick up on your actions and adjust themselves accordingly. To be honest, often, this is nothing more than a habit for them AND they do it subconsciously. |
