I’ve been toying with 2 ideas lately. Going back to steel shafts since getting my elbow fixed and using something with some forgiveness compared to my Titleist blades. These were listed so cheap on FB marketplace that I considered calling a buddy for sniper overwatch.  Turns out it was just a nice guy that wasn’t using them and wanted them gone. It's just that the vast majority of golfers do not have the clubhead speed or consistent contact to enjoy those clubs. I no longer do. I make good contact but clubhead speed has fallen to below 90 with a driver unless I really give it a go. In my formative years of golf I owned Ram Laser FX clubs on stiff Dynamic Gold shafts. If I didn't pure it it didn't go anywhere, But when you pured a long iron the clouds parted, a ray of light beamed down and the angels sang.

I have the opposite problem when looking at used clubs. I’m usually looking for just the heads because most complete clubs are too light/soft. 7 iron numbers. I generally expect to see about 500 rpm more spin and a couple degrees lower launch off grass vs. the mat I was using. Attached File |

I was never at that distance. Yikes. I am considered a very good irons player in my circle (which averages about 70 years old) as I am very straight and hit a 7i about 160. I've been using fitted PXG irons for about 6 years now and will never go back to anything else. I don't care how old and ratty they look I'll play these until my swing further slows and I need ladies shafts.

I tried those heads last year when getting fit for new irons. They actually went a little too far. I was going to have to have some type of club between the last wedge on the iron set and my existing wedges. I think I demo'd the Nippon 120 X flex shafts, which are right at 119-120g. I had Taylormade 770s that were like 7 or 8 years old, they were fine but the new irons I was fitted for had less dispersion. $500 is a helluva deal, but man I gotta ask, why are you messing around with used clubs at your skill level? You have your specs, why deviate on these or your putter at all? Are you fighting some type of consistent miss ? |

As far as irons go, I’m very good at distance control. My miss is side to side. If I could tighten that up a bit with just an equipment change, which initial testing seems to show, it would be a big win. X100 is one of a few shafts I already know works for me and I tweaked the lofts before ever hitting a ball. I’ll get them on the course Wednesday and see how it goes. And if I don’t like them, I’ll sell them and go back to my Titleists until something else catches my eye.

Those that played a lot with him said he never had only 14 clubs in his bag unless it was a tournament. He even won a tournament playing a different iron set each round. Arnie however I don’t think ever sold one of his clubs. I can’t remember the number but it was somewhere around 9-10,000 he had in his collection when he died. |

We walk into the secondswing golf store and all the employees know him by his first name.  Me, I have changed one club in the bag in the last 2 years. And I play 4 days a week. I bought a used 7 wood to replace the hybrid. Have played it about 12 rounds and still not sure. Have hit some amazing shots with it - and some horrific shots. The hybrid is a lot more consistent but man those amazing shots........ But I digress. Every one is different on equipment. Some like to tinker some don't. Ain't no right or wrong to it IMO. |

Man if he ever has a garage sale I am SO there.

Nice round. Yeah sometimes the putts drop and sometimes they torture you. I've been struggling with the putter of late and Tuesday a pal who is a good putter gave me a few tips. Very helpful. Yesterdays round (skins) went well. Remember I'm old and it's a MUCH easier course but I shot a 73 with a double on the easiest short par 5. I went for the green in 2 with water front and,,,,,, splash.
