Contacted the Vermont DMV. My vehicle is banned and no longer able to be registered up there and was issued without a title. I’ll need to send them 42$ and a form and they’ll send the title down to me. Still has a license plate for now, may be expired but it’s got one

That will probably still be available when you’re ready; it’s been on eBay for about three years I would say, with variations on the photos and the verbiage. Have you ever sat in one? The driver’s position forces your head up into a small cupola. I didn’t find it appealing being a person over 6 feet. If I recall correctly, shifting is somewhat ass backwards, like you select a gear, wait a fraction of a second, then depress the “clutch” and wait for the air operated system to clunk into gear. Otherwise it’s a terribly intriguing and very large vehicle. |

Otherwise it’s a terribly intriguing and very large vehicle. I've never been in one but I'm familiar with the transmission, it's similar to a Ferret, select the gear and then press a pedal to shift. I want one because it's the largest vehicle you can realistically get that's street legal. The Roland (other thread in the forum) is 5 and a half tons fully loaded. The BRDM is 7 and a half. The OT64 is larger and more space with actual doors. Air cooled, tatra V8, and with a neat history. My friend owned one. They can be finicky |

I found the dang air line fitting. I had my gym bag in the back Of my car and it must have rolled into it. This was only discovered 200 miles from home and AFTER I sent the sample off so I’m still down one. ![]() Attached File Attached File |

Good news and bad news. At the beginning of Feb I sent off the air fitting to the fabricator to get rebuilt. It took a while because they're backed up. I got the qoute back yesterday and my jaw hit the floor. Minimum order quantity? 20. Price each? 60$. That's roughly double what it should cost. 1200 for 20 pieces when I need one. 2 years ago to fabricate new wheel studs was 300 for 30. 6 months ago to fabricate new wheel cylinder links was 700ish for 50. Now to fabricate a similar part is 1200 for 20. But the good news is the sample part will arrive today which means I now have all of the parts to reassemble the BRDM because I found the missing part while away on military events. Part was shipped via UPS yesterday and will arrive today because the transit from Austin to DFW is less than a day. |

Attached File The spare fittings from my Polish friend arrived Now time to install them I will probably paint/prime these to avoid rust since they have flash rust on them. Time to go change the oil in the BRDM because I am hoping to start it up Friday/Saturday. |

Getting ready to run the engine this week and it’s been a couple years since the last oil change. They’re not too picky on the type, it can take sae30 to even heavier engine oil. I use 10w30 First, find the drain plug-it’s in the back right of the hull. Attached File Use a 1 1/4 inch socket to undo the drain plug. Be sure to make a mess and drain used, nasty engine oil all over the floor, arm, shirt, shorts, and face and not the drain pan. Attached File While the oil is dripping out let’s move on to the filter. Attached File ![]() Remove the housing by removing the wing nut to expose the 14mm retaining nut for the spinner assembly. Remove The assembly. Use the fingers to unbolt the spinner from the filter. ![]() Attached File Attached File The zmz41/gaz41 engine uses a centrifugal oil filter which is really cool technology for the Now let’s clean the “filter” assembly and the jets ![]() ![]() The gunk is deposited on the inside of the housing by centrifugal force. I use a soft wire brush and carb cleaner to remove it. I didn’t get a pic of it before I cleaned it. Maint man lists 10w30 and 5w30 as suitable alternatives so thats what I use. Attached File These engines were never really picky about oil, just that it had it. One manual states M-6z/10V (DV-AS3p-10V) which is equivelant to 20w50. Lots of engines from that era use 10w30 so I just use that although eventually I am going to just put cheap amazon/kirklands 5w30 with some ZZDP additive in it so every vehicle in my stable (Yaris, Highlander, Roland, BRDM, power tools) all use it. |

Went to the DMV today to accomplish 3 things: Register the trailer Renew the farm truck registration Register the BRDM in Texas from Vermont. The trailer and Truck were renewed/registered easily enough. They threw a few over the BRDM because of the VIN and the lack of info on whether I had paid sales tax to vermont. I had, it was through dirt legal and I had to mail off a 3200$ check. FML. This is the third trip to accomplish this and they have a cow about something new Every Single TIME Calling the Vermont DMV again to get that info. |

9/5/26-it runs. ![]() BRDM2 first run in 4 years Have a decent fuel leak at the fuel tank transfer switch/valve so I need to get a replacement and replace that so it doesn't leak anymore and cause the system to lose prime thus repeating the fuel issues we've had. It started and ran once the amazing help I had figured out the fuel water seperator was empty and not getting fuel to it no matter how many times I primed the fuel pump. I didn't need an electric fuel pump, the mechanical one was working just fine (made in the USSR quality). The fuel transfer switch has a leak which causes the system to lose its prime. Insane. It runs and that's the most important part. Baby steps, now time to order a replacement fuel tank transfer switch but first I have to lookup the part number in the -10/-20/TM and order it with my polish guy. |

God bless Soviet engineers for using so many parts across various platforms ![]() Attached File The exact part I need, almost identical part number except the prefix. Good and bad news. The fuel transfer switch from the NL arrived today. Note I said it in singular-they forgot one. I had ordered two, one for me and one for another vehicle. I compared the part numbers and the prefix was different but the last 6 was the same so I assumed they were the same part. I started comparing them and the inner "hole" that allows the gasoline to flow seems small and I can see light through the bottom of the rotating assembly since it doesn't seat all the way. Attached File Great, I got a defective part. It's much newer made and of extremely poor quality. The original soviet made part on the BRDM is not the best but it is a much nicer part over all with cleaned casting lines, a nicer finish, good threads, and no gouges and damage to the housing. The UAZ part was so much worse. I paid 135 for these 2-55 for the valves, 65 for shipping (ouch), and the remainder was the stupid tariffs. ![]() Attached File I pulled the original off the BRDM and after 3 hours got it out-it was a pain and due to my back I was in absolute agony most of the time as I had to reach all the way back and hold the nut while I used a 1/4 ratchet and a 6" extension and a 10mm socket to get it off. ![]() Attached File Attached File I pulled the valves apart and compared them. The BRDM one has a much larger "inlet" on the rotating assembly which makes sense-it's a v8 and the UAZ is a 4cyl. The V8 needs more fuel flow. The shaft on the UAZ is larger at 9.5mm compared to 8.5mm for the BRDM. ![]() Attached File During diassassembly there was a rubber gasket on the BRDM valve that had utterly disintegrated over 50 years of gas exposure and crumbled to pieces when I pulled it apart thus why it was leaking. I had a bright idea to try and swap the parts from the UAZ valve to the BRDM one but the shafts were not the same size. Attached File The BRDM one was filled with grime and gunk so I took some brake cleaner, wire brushes, and a glock brush and a drill and cleaned it out and scrubbed the rotating assembly so it was much cleaner. The rotating assembly seats fully in the housing and is smooth as butter with no play. The UAZ one is not. Before ![]() ![]() ![]() During ![]() After Attached File Attached File ![]() I used Chat gpt to try and find a similar replacement but no luck. After talking with a good friend some more he suggested I make my own and thanks to amazon I now have an 18mm, 17mm, and 8mm punch along with a sheet of gasoline resistant rubber coming to the house for 65$ instead of the hundreds to get someone else to make a gasket. I'll finish rebuilding the valve on Sunday or Monday when I have free time. I will wrap the threads in PTFE tape to make sure no gas leaks because fires are not cool. I went ahead and ordered new hardware for the inside, too-stainless washers since the originals were kind of rusty and gross and caked with corrosion and filth. 20$ for some stainless washers from China (only ones who had that specific size) Attached File I am learning so much, sometimes it's a costly lesson. The BRDM Godfather is learning a lot ![]() |

Attached File Second sample gasket made. It’s a little undersized on the ID by .5mm and a little oversized on the OD for a tighter seal. I’m doing a better job than the original worker who made it 50 years ago. The secret is to use a heat gun to heat up the cutter so it cuts the rubber better. I tried a candle at first but it didn’t heat up the cutter fast enough or put out enough BTUs so the Hercules heat gun came out. Winner winner Attached File Attached File I should have the completed part done by tonight and tested and ready to be installed. I might try again with the 18mm cutter so it provides more material to push against the inside and create a more perfect seal so no leaks happen. Now I know the secret, the 18mm cutter and the hardware are out for delivery right now |

I AM ALL THAT IS MAN After 7 different versions and a lot of tries and failures I managed to rebuild it to useable/working and improved standards. The inside has been scrubbed clean with a glock brush and drill. There were significant crud/grime/caked on deposits on the valve-those are all gone now. Corroded internal hardware has been replaced with SS 316 grade hardware, the original rubber gasket was made lovingly by hand by me 12 different times in 2 different thicknesses-first with 1/8th and then 1/16th. The 1/8th one was too fat to allow the securing nut to go all the way down so it put a lot of pressure on the valve swiveling body which made it stiff and unable to be turned. The 1/16ths is perfect plus it is easy to work with and cut and doesn't stop the retaining nut from going down all the way. The original gasket had an 8.5mm ID/16.8mm OD approximately. The replacement is 17mm OD and 8mm ID so a little smaller ID and a little larger OD for a better seal. The securing nut has been wrapped with PTFE tape to make it even more gas tight. It's better than new and made by a dirty capitalist instead of a communist peasant Using a heat gun to heat up the cutter make it a lot easier to work with rubber. Attached File Attached File Sheet of 1/16th rubber Attached File Samples made, pre-ID cut Attached File SS316 hardware. Attached File You can see the thickness difference between the two. I'll start installing it maybe Friday or Saturday. installed and test fit. ![]() ![]() Completed and working part. ![]() ![]() ![]() Ready to install |

Now if I could get him and Michael from Circle 7 to come to our annual Ft Hood event they'd have a blast toodling around Ft Hood in some cold war era goodness. I know both of them and michael is a fantastic guy. Michael’s Brdm is my first one The guy at the museum also has a brdm there, too. I would go to the Fort Hood event but I'm always there in uniform so I don't get a choice to bring my vehicle, my vehicle is a ford transit van |

The radiator repair shop in FW refused to work on the gas tank because they said it had been lined before and the lining was failing. I dropped the tank off at an off road fab shop to get built. They said 1000-1500. It'll probably be made out of aluminum. All of this came at a bad time, have an 11k foundation repair bill. No water in Texas caused a lot of issues this year
