My buddy that recently (well, in 2020) moved out west to Vegas ended up back in Florida about three weeks ago for a long-term project... in Orlando. The week after he ordered a Blacktip Tech DPV and had it shipped to his house... in Vegas. So, he's flying to Vegas this weekend to grab his gear and scooter. I had a really good month selling RE the last 30-40 days (and painted a house to boot) so my dumb ass plopped down over $2k for the same scooter, two 10AH Dewalt batteries for it, and the camera mount to stick my (new as of last year) GoPro 9 on it... plus I might buy two more smaller 6AH batteries and a dual charger just so I can have two sets that are suitable for rec dives since almost anything Dewalt is on sale at Lowes right now.  I was on the phone with him shortly thereafter and my wife was like "is that Cody? TELL HIM IF HE CONVINCES YOU TO BUY ANYMORE SHIT THAT COSTS SEVERAL GRAND HE'S NOT WELCOME TO STAY HERE ANYMORE WHEN HE'S IN TOWN" and walked off laughing  I have another friend who's willing to basically give me a free DPV class so I won't have any issue using it on boats and I'm looking at trying to do AN/DP, maybe this fall. Need to get some time in the water and get the rust off. |

Class at WI mine so I just drove there. 3-4 nights hotel. Full cave: $250/day class fee. 5 days for class plus $250 for guided fun dives tomorrow. $400 hotel. $725 plain ticket. Had to get a wetsuit $500. Big rolling duffle to haul gear. $225 from REI. MX is cheap for food. |

| Don’t forget you have to add possibly new gear/tanks, eLearning fees ($150 per class for TDI), food for class days, car gas to get there. Mine was a private class. |

Did one dive with the scooter and promptly got COVID two days later. I dove Tuesday, felt great, Wednesday I felt great, a little sore in the shoulders/neck, Thursday I woke up with a full-on sinus infection complete with the worst headache of my life. Ended up having some nausea, loss of balance, 100+ degree fever, extreme fatigue (most tired I've ever been in my life) and loss of appetite. I figured it was from the bacteria-laden pond that is Hunter Springs in Crystal River (which has been posted "high bacteria" for the last.... five years? LOL). So, I went to bed at 2pm yesterday after taking every OTC cold med we have in this house, and didn't get up until 8am today except for maybe 90 minutes or so being awake to order pizza and eat it last night. Felt like a rockstar all morning, took the at-home COVID test to eliminate the possibility as I did travel this week via airline and have a friend that was supposed to come over this weekend to go diving that I don't want to get sick... tested positive within two minutes. Called my doc and he put me on meds, told me most people lately that he's seen with it are over it within 3-5 days. All I have now is a barely-sore throat and chest congestion, so hopefully that's as bad as it gets and I can test negative before next weekend so that he and I can still go do our South FL shore dives with the scooters. I'm thinking it may be time to take full cave here soon, just so I can progress toward using this DPV in a cave environment as that's where 90% of the use will be. I had no idea until AFTER purchasing it that most sites don't allow DPV use in open water as I'd assumed/have since learned... |

The only thing I'll gain by becoming full cave is the "ability" to do something I basically already do (complex navigation is something I'm not comfortable with underwater, and I'm okay with that - still plenty of cave to see off of one or two navigational decisions) and at the cost of probably $2k by the time I add in travel/lodging, gas fills, tuition, whatever other equipment I need, etc. Some days I'm okay with certain dives and other days I'm not... I don't tend to NOT listen to my body when it's telling me to stop short of a certain point/limit. |

Since I dive all winter at the WI mine and the instructor is always there, she WILL know what you’re doing. You definitely follow your cert guidelines. Now I get to go further back on the main guideline, hopefully to the end so I can see the cool ore cart(s). |

I did mine initial cave cert thru NAUI which put you at the apprentice level with no expiration date. I was diving 1-3 trips a week for a few years before I finally went full cave. I think I had close to 650 dives at that point. Shortly after I did my initial NAUI cert I did my AN/DP course so I was pretty much set for most anything you’re likely to encounter in cave country save for the obvious like Eagles Nest and the WKPP. |

The way I look at it is the same way it was taught to me: there's so much to do, and see, on the main line (or maybe within one jump) that I could probably spend the first 1000 dives checking it all out and not see everything... most people just want to have the ability to say they went to X spot in the cave, but honestly, I don't care. Even a DPV would just make me get to places I could easily swim to, faster, leaving me with more gas to explore before I hit thirds and exit. I'm lame. I've become a bit more cautious than I used to be - guess now that I'm married I finally have a reason to stick around, or maybe another 5-6 years of age makes you more careful. Who knows. Either way, I'm pretty much over COVID now I believe (symptoms are really just the same leftover fatigue and occasional dry cough that I had last year when I caught it), so my buddy and I are gonna test the Blacktips out in the Rainbow River on Sunday morning early. Plan is to scooter upriver to the nice sandy training spot where American Pro and other operators drop their OW classes, maybe run some reels or something, then drift/scooter back to where we put in (KP Hole). Just to make sure they're weighted/trimmed properly before we go to south FL. Hoping that next weekend we can go down to Palm Beach/Broward and dive Blue Heron Bridge and maybe the SS Copenhagen, then head back. He doesn't want to do any boat dives and I don't really feel like paying for a charter (or doing anything near 100 feet deep just yet, after being sick the last two weeks... just in case I have equalization issues and have to sit out). |

Update: I was not as decongested as I thought. My head kinda feels like it's in a vice now, and today's adventure had me almost fall asleep when I finally got back close to my house. Came inside, laid down, connected my Perdix to my phone to download the dive info and promptly fell asleep for like 2.5 hours We had planned to basically snorkel upriver (using the DPVs and towing a dive flag)... first off, the dive flag I have sucks donkey balls. It's a two-piece design and the flag slips over the top... which means every time he went underwater more than five feet or so, the flag would dip under the surface and be dragged off the stick by the current. So I pretty much spent half my time going up-river, swerving around catching the flag before it hit the bottom and re-affixing it to the stick. Finally we found a shallow spot to stand up and cut some line off a reel and tied it down so it wouldn't go anywhere, but there is no way in hell I'd take that flag to Blue Heron Bridge or off the beach at all... so, guess we're spending $40-50 to get one that sits on a cigar style float or a giant car-tire sized circular float. If I scooter upriver again I definitely want one of those two styles vs. what I've got. Took me three minutes to be able to descend to 20 feet, once we got to where we were going, but I had almost no issues equalizing on the way back up. Normally I can just wiggle my jaw and equalize my sinuses/ears, so clearly I still had some shit stopped up in my head. Got my XDeep set up a little bit better while in the shallows, but I still need to adjust my tank bands and leashes. Definitely ordering a longer left tank/short hose for my necklaced second stage - it was way better than the dive at Hunter Springs when I first tested the DPV out, but still a few inches too short. Not sure if I'd just put up with that for all these years, or if I've got one a bit longer stashed somewhere in one of my Rubbermaid totes of spares and just grabbed what I thought was the right one, when I was re-assembling my sidemount setup after diving single-tank last fall in the Keys. Kind of want to put 9" SPG hoses on as well, instead of 6". Would make it easier to look at them now that I dive gauges-down instead of lollipopped like I used to. Overall, a very fun time. We were in the water for a total of about 4 hours, with 74 minutes bottom time at the "training spot" we went to. The new 3mil wetsuit I bought yesterday worked pretty well and was easy enough to don/doff, but it doesn't have a flap to cover the zipper on your back when it's zipped all the way up - I feel like this might eventually make it try to un-zip on me at some point, but it didn't today. I also accidentally drove the scooter straight up my buddy's ass when he stopped in front of me on the way upriver, and I wasn't paying attention. lmfao |

@FloridaHunter07 I never lollipopped my SPGs SM. Either ran them down the tank (open water dives) or two transmitters. The latter is much more convenient for cave diving. |

Having something that's just plain webbing with a couple hard weights threaded in or in pouches, and that 20lb MSR-style bladder makes a super lightweight travel setup that would still allow me to dive sidemount anywhere they rent aluminum tanks, if diving is not the sole purpose of the trip (say, a cruise or vacation with my wife). I'd like to take the time one day and figure out how to balance a single AL80 on it as well so I can just hop in somewhere if I see something interesting |

I might take the backplate and wing, but I'd probably be more tempted to say "okay, I won't be spending my money with you guys then" and not give them my business. That's the kind of thing I'd research before picking a destination, too. I can't stand the "cattle car" method of operation, no matter whether it's diving related or not. My entire sidemount setup, as envisioned, would take up less space than a gallon jug of water in my luggage and probably weigh about the same, sans fins... can't say the same for my BPW. |

| Maybe good news. Had a 9/16 ship date for CCR. Found out today instructor is trying to get it delivered by the 16th. If that happens and my classmate from MN can make it, class starts weekend of 17th/18th. |
